Young&Broke and we need a multitrack

we're on a really tight budget but need a semi-good multitrack that can handle 1 vocalist, 1 guitar, 1 bass, and the 2 or 3 mic's it takes to get the drums recorded

Short on cash? Two words..."Armed Robbery". Does wonders for a 'positive cash flow'...if you fuck up and get caught...look at it as a learning experience...a chance to refine you playing and writing skills. If you're not willing to completely dedicate yourself to the creation of your art, then learn a new trade and keep music as a hobby...

Korg also has some really low-cost hard disk recorders...major bang for the buck. But the problem with all these boxes is limited number of inputs if you want to record things live. Get used to doing overdubs!

Concerning budget:

"around 500 max.. sorta kills most digital..

changed name to the band name instead of my email addy"

With some prudent shopping on the online auction sites, scanning the forsale sections of the newsgroups you can probably pick up the analog gear you need to get started with that budget. It's gonna take a lot of work and learning to get a respectable demo tape from that kind of gear and I'd bet to say that 90% of the time your gonna get this kind of respons from anyone with even a little bit of clout in the music business:

"If you're not willing to completely dedicate yourself to the creation of your art, then learn a new trade and keep music as a hobby..."

If you double that budget and get again probably something low end in the digital medium, apply yourself ernestly to that learning curve, and you and you're players have some chops you stand a much better chance of getting a real listen, IMHO.

If you hang around this kind of forum, you see lots of debates about digital (high end) vs analog (high end) gear. High end meaning 6 figures plus. When you're talking low end digital vs low end analog, there's no debate really.

That low end analog will do you as much good as just rolling that $500 dollar bill up and burning it.

Again, IMHO and my humble experience.

Happy Holidays To All
