Tedster
All these music forums slow down over the weekends, I assume because a lot of folks are gigging. So, to play Jay Leno, where's everyone appearing at? Our band had kinda the weekend off, although we kinda sorta did an impromptu Christmas thing for a local community theatre group. We're off 'til the 15th, then at the Rockfront in Holt, MO (just north of KC)... And while on that topic, what's the best club y'all have played, and the worst? Anderton
I'm not sure the forums really do slow down over the weekends. They used to, but not anymore. I think that some people actually sign on AFTER the gig, just to unwind. But no gigging for me this weekend. I'm still recovering from my gigs over in Switzerland... Tedster
Nothing a couple of Ricola won't cure, I'm sure... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif Well, and this raises something of a question. We played at a club the other night. A family from Brighton UK were there, and liked us a lot (we play a lot of Brit style stuff)...the one younger lad said we'd go over well at a club in Brighton. Kinda a working vacation, y'know. How is this accomplished? It sounds fun, but possibly a bigger pain than it's worth. Is it financially feasible for club calibre bands to do stuff like that??? trick fall
Great idea for a thread.....My all time favorite gig in New York City is Squeezebox at Don Hills. Friday nights and the format is...DJ, band at about 12:30, then at around 1:45 a different performer, usually a drag queen, plays with their house band. Pretty much all ways a packed house and the hostess, Mistress Formika, is the most rocking person I've ever met. Unfortunately after about five years of doing this they're calling it quits, but at least my band will be one of the bands playing on the final night. ST.Morigeaugte.net
This weekend is was a private club here on Whidbey Is. These folks absolutely love to rock!!!!! From T.O.P to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Being that we work day jobs, but can't lose the love to gig, these kinda jobs are what we live for. The money is not a factor, but when we get a modest tip it's apparent some folks had a good time and to us that's what it's all about. And it's these gigs that also land us Friday or Saturday night jobs in places like Pioneer Square in Seattle which is definitely Boogiesville!!!!!!!! batman
"Nothing a couple of Ricola won't cure, I'm sure... " Hey Tedster, what's Ricola??! We've only just got used to Gatorade over here!!.... regarding the club in Brighton...it could be the Zap Club, which is a happening gaff right on the sea-front. It'd be a good idea to take your wet-suit and water-proof amp though!!
Tedster
Sorry Adrien, Ricola are Swiss cough drops that they advertise over here, with a couple of lederhosen clad guys tooting one of those 15 foot long horns with the Matterhorn in the background on the commercials... As for the Zap Club, that could be it. Are you in Brighton, or just familiar with the town? "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
russreign
Hey do I get to answer this, even though I'm just a lowly DJ? Well, this thursday night I'm at club Plush in Long Island, this Friday at Cream in Manhattan... Best gig ever would have to be a tie between the Roseland Ballroom here in NYC or LaBoom in Cancun, Mexico http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif Music Is The Answer! Brenton Trott
In my living room!!!!!!! Let me explain, I play the drums (for anyone) and have just finished playing on a new CD which is due for release (local only) next week. The singer/songwriter had the venue set for the launch gig, had sent out invitations and contacted local papers, radio stations etc. The venue contacted him and told him he would have to change the night (I can't remember why), so he sent out more invites contacted everyone again etc. So about two weeks ago we started rehearsals for the gig. Yesterday they rang him and told him that they had forgotten they already had something on that night and he would have to change to another night. He told them to shove it. So like I said, I'm gigging in my lounge room Sorry I needed to get that off my chest. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/frown.gif Brenton Cheers Brenton
Punchmo
Brent, reminds me of a local rock cd release party for a band here in central PA last year. The project was recorded and mixed at my studio and was mastered in CA. Dupes were finished and the pr was out on radio, newspaper and local musician's rags about the release party. Less then 2 weeks before the event, the club owner calls and says that they can get Jimmy's Chicken Shack on only one nite...the same nite as the heavily promoted release party. 2 options, warm up Jimmy's Chicken Shack or move. Needless to say, the band opted to warm up. The place was sold out. Turned out to be pretty cool in the end and, I knew the FOH engineer and stood with him through the mix of my band's show. Can be a silver lining sometimes http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif sp
Brenton Trott
Yes, I know what you mean sp but I don't think we are going to be that lucky this time. It's just rock n roll I guess Brenton Cheers Brenton

If ya got somethin ya believe in...Don't never ever give up. Be professional in your approach to reschedules. If the club owner is just a complete jerk, look for another venue. sp's experience isn't the only silver lining, but definetly one ya gotta keep in mind. These so-called "cough-drops" are sure to consist of full-on opiated alkaloids...shoot. these guys are still making kosher Absinthe, which was banned in the US in 1912, but has recently been imported into the UK (a loophole in the law, exploited by two musicians..) With regard to the Matterhorn, that's the thing that you cough up, or falls out of your nose, after too much o this kinda Swiss hospitality...you understand... Michael Riehle
Okay, from that other coast... ...I have no gigs this weekend, but I just managed to nail down a couple for the band. After *two* years of preparation. Okay, most of that time was spent trying to find a drummer. I feel like I'm in a bad Spinal Tap remake. (Of course, any Spinal Tap remake would, by definition, be bad.) Two different bars: C&J's in Santa Clara on a Friday and the following night at The Roadhouse in Sunnyvale. The thing is, neither of these are "nice" places, but Rock and Roll rules there (okay, Fridays it's Blooz at The Roadhouse, but it's Saturday). The other bad thing about all the clubs at this level is that they book so far in advance. We aren't playing until the end of January. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/frown.gif But I needed to gloat. It's a real band now. ------------------ Michael Riehle Bass Player/Band Leader fivespeed Michael Riehle
Tedster
Absinthe is what drove Vincent Van Gogh mad, is it not? The opiated cough drops sound interesting, though... Over here, we used to be able to buy (I can't remember, was it Robitussin PM?) some cough syrup over the counter with codeine in it, all you had to do was sign for it. Can't remember if it cured my cough or not. That's probably the point... Goldschlager...isn't that the stuff that looks like it's got people's fillings floating about in it? nhcomp45aol.com
My favorite place to play is LaBec Rouge in Hampton Beach,NH. The women grab and kiss you while you are playing. Makes me glad I am playing bass in this band instead of my usual drums. Last time at LaBec there were around 400 people there, People who were with the band went out during our break and could not get back in for an hour or so. It was packed above legal limit. Good time was had by all.
