Brakka
The first order of business is to comeup with a band name other than "Brakka's team." Here are the team player profiles as posted in the signup thread, in the order that you registered:
Brakka
Whoops- I messed that link up at the end for my music, and now it won't let me edit it... http://www.brakka.com/music -------------------- The only that I feel strongly about is that no matter what, the song(s) that we come up with will be "writen by" all team members- no matter what each person did. Now- waht do you guys want to do? I think it would be cool to do two songs, but we can just start with one and see where things go. Or if two fun ideas start happening, we can just do both. I was thinking that a "Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers" kind of thing would be something that everyone might like. Rock but not too heavy, lots of guitars and cool piano/vintage keys, three chords etc. If someone wants to volunteer to sing lead vocals, go ahead. We could just do a "group vocal" kind of thing, too. I'm imagining us all having input as far as lyrics. Here's something- we don't have a drummer. There were very few in the draft. But here's something else- I play some kit. My housemate owns an old Ludwig kit with a nice Yamaha maple snare, and I'm sure I could talk him into letting me play it for a bit. I'd have to borrow/rent some mics and set up some space in my basement, but that's do-able. The recording part of it would be a good challenge for me. Alright- bring on the ideas!!! polyt
I have a bassline to submit for consideration. It might be darker than we want to get though. I won't have an MP3 for perusal until late in the week, and I can't get back to the forum until Wednesday morning. Have fun without me!
fantasticsound
Reporting for duty, as ordered, SIRRRR!!!! I like the Petty idea... I'm sure we'll have a few more bouncing around. As for drums, if necessary I can program my SR-16, but if you feel you can cover the kit, Brakka, have at it. I'm just glad we have a real bass player among us. I just sold my Peavey T-40, so I'm currently bassless... not that I can't gain access to one if the need arises. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. fantasticsound
Ok... How about the Brakka Pakka? Brakka
Ooo- Brakka Pakka is cool. I don't want to have my name in the title though. Maybe something that uses the -akka though... Rat Pakka? I think polyt is our bass man. Maybe we can fit in some analog synth bass too. And I bet we can find space for ALL of us to play some guitar. As far as drums, If the live kit proves to be too much for me as far as recording, I think between you me & Dave we can program some great drum tracks. I love programming percussion, and of course Dave is great at it. I've got a ton of samples, and I use Reason/Cubase. I also have an Alesis DM pro that has trigger inputs, but it's busted. I couldn't get the parts for it right after the Alesis buyout thing happened, but I haven't looked recently. The only trigger I have right now is a Kick, though. fantasticsound
Well, I have a trigger pad set but no trigger brain. My buddy used to build his own, prior to buying a V-drum kit for his studio. I got his original set when he updated the design. Still looking for a cheap D4. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. He also has V-drums. I don't know if he wants to sell the D4, but I'll be glad to ask him. Brakka
Mmmm... DMPro kit... Hey Dave and polyt- I saw that you registered over at the brakka.com/forum, but you haven't posted. So far that seems to be a sign that the registration didn't work. You may need to re-register. I turned off the email notification thing, that seemed to be a problem. If your first tries didn't work, you guys can re-register under different names with fake email addresses, and when I see you there I'll give you access to the private Brakka team forum and delete your first tries so you can change your usernames back to your original ones in "Profile." (Whew what a sentence!) Still waiting on Cowbell Allen and Joachim over there, but it should be easy for them to register since Dave and polyt had the problems already. Tedster and fantasticsound have been over there (in the "Open Mic" forum) for a few days. (this is funny- there's only one music topic in the "Open Mic" thread right now, and I think it's the only one Neil hasn't posted in. ) ---------------- Now where the heck is that Tedster, anyway? Do you guys have any song ideas to post? I'd like to hear what everyone thinks.

Joachim P. Dyndale
Sorry I'm late... But here I am, reporting for duty! I've been very busy lately and I'm working quite a few night shifts these days, so during the day time I don't have much energy (I've been really sick, and I haven't gotten a chance to fully recover). Brakka: Sorry I haven't sent you a demo of my playing yet. The reasons are stated above. I have a couple of days off starting the day after tomorrow, so I'll record something then if you still want it. I haven't heard of the band you mentioned for our style, but I'm sure I can find some reference tracks on KaZaa I'm heading over to your forum now to register. -Joachim Dyndale -------------------- Einstein: The difference between genius and stupidity is: Genius has limits My Blog... Tedster
If you guys think a Petty style tune would be cool, I'm all for it. I even have some JANGLE POWER at my disposal (Rick 360-12). I've, uh, well, I could have a tune sorta...if anyone was interested. Probably a good idea would be to have a few folks toss in a tune, and then vote on which one would lend itself best to the collaborative effort. Does it have to be original? I mean, the multiple-player format reminds me of seeing an all-star cast performing Dylan's "My Back Pages" one time. Wouldn't have to be that tune, but, along that line. But, whatever is in for the rules. This team rules. I'm not sure I'm worthy...but I'll try my damndest not to screw up the soup. I would suggest people tossing in a very simple demo of some contender tunes, just acoustic and vocals (or keys and vocals). Then, someone would need to be the Sir George Martin of the group, and kinda decide on an arrangement, and what instrumentation/backing vox/etc. After that, things can proceed as normal...if the songwriter wants to be the one to sing it, or have someone else sing it. It would be nice to have something that could allow our respective virtuosities to shine, at least a little, but ultimately a good song...everything for the song. Brakka
I was hoping to have everyone throw in on the song (yes it must be an original), but I guess I can be Sir George. or at least get things rolling a bit. I think the Heartbreakers idea could be fun. 3 or 4 chords, simple melody, cool lyrics. Joachim- do what you can to listen to some Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers stuff. If you must use Kazaa, go ahead but don't tell anyone I said so. I'll try to get a simple demo up (without vocal) by the weekend, and some chord changes. If you guys have ideas about it, then we can all throw ideas in. I'm looking for the chords I had writen down last week... found em: the tune is in G major. Verse: G. That's all I got for the verse so far, but the melody can dictate the chords. Chorus: C | G | G | C | C | D |D,C| G | with vocal lines basically on bar 1 3 5 7, and guitar licks on 2 4 6 8. Bridge: ? It could go to a D & C thing, or maybe go to E with an open E guitar chord. Maybe E & D... The form would be pretty standard (Intro V C V C B V C C) And I had this cool ending idea- end the tune on a G chord. Then everyone sort of sneaks back in as the chord is dying down, and we do like a one-minute jam in G where everyone could get some solo licks in. Could be a fun thing. What do you guys think? Any lyric ideas? Any lead vocal volunteers?
Tedster
I've got a first line: "Well, I woke up this mo'nin'" Oh, wait, you said Petty, not blues. My bad. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
Tedster
Oh...okay, lessee... Hmmm, how 'bout? "Well she was an American girl Raised on promises" Good line, huh? WHADDYA MEAN IT...oh, yeah. That's right, I guess it has. But it does sound like Petty, right? Oh...you mean RICHARD Petty? Some shitkickin' NASCAR tunes? Cool! Tedster
Okay, sorry for getting silly on y'all. Brakka...you've got Tom Petty in mind...but... Which Petty tune would you like it to move like? "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
Brakka
I know that the cool people like pre-Full Moon Fever stuff, but I was thinking going for something in the style of that album. I'm no Jeff Lynne, though. IIRC, that's not actually a Heartbreakers album. I don't even own it any more. Earlier stuff is great too. It seemed to be something that would fit for this project. Rock but not too heavy, lots of guitars and sweet keyboards, simple drums. And it seems that lots of people like the Heartbreakers. It's really just a starting point, though. Joachim P. Dyndale
Don't know what this might turn into, but I have a question: You're saying that we should only have a few chords, and you're talking about G,C,D,E... It's okay to have a minor chord (or two), right? And hopefully some 9's, m7's and b5's? I like colourful chords, but of course, I'll follow which-ever style our Producer Mr. Brakka decides we should go for... That suggestion about the ending sounds cool. It depends on how the song evolves though. Such an ending won't fit on any song. -Joachim Dyndale -------------------- Einstein: The difference between genius and stupidity is: Genius has limits My Blog... Tedster
Let's see, G walk down to Em, then F, to a C, then uhh...D...yeah, that's it... And words...oooh! I know... How 'bout something hard hitting, a sad road song like... "If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember m..." (Interrupted by the sound of beer cans being thrown, clay pots shattering) OWWWW!!! Hey guys I was kidding! (CRASH) "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
Brakka
I'm not saying we should only use those chords. But there are some GREAT songs that only use 3 or 4 chords- I-IV-V. Lots of Petty tunes are like that. And Stones tunes, Zep, etc. The guitar & piano parts have lots of variation, but it's still 3 chords. I'm open to anything. I hope you guys all have time/desire to put input into any part of the writing/arranging. If not, that's cool. Whatever we all think are the best ideas will make into our song. And we can do two songs if we want. Try to get your hands on some Petty, Joachim. If I get time, I'll put a couple Heartbreakers mp3's up for you to download. Nothing illegal there i think, it's just research.
Joachim P. Dyndale
Don't worry guys! If Sir James Paul McCartney can dream Yesterday, then I can dream just as big a hit. Brakka
I like your enthusiasm. Actually, on my pre-draft list of all of the players available, after your name I put "enthused!" No need to think that we need to dream up a "hit" here though- I think the idea is to learn something and have fun. These are some things that I think we can all learn from doing this: 1: How to collaborate with people you've never played with before 2: How to share tracks back & forth online during the process 3: How to play in a style that you don't play every day In addition, I personally will be learning how to manage a website manage online uploads/downloads via ftp mic & record a drum kit cheaply ...with some music producing experience thrown in- although like I implied, I'll hardly be running things here with an iron fist (unlike some other Fantasy League managers ). I'll hopefully let things happen organically and lead when I need to. ... The due date for the completed song(s) is Sept 1. I think for the first week or two, we can just chat and not worry about pushing ourselves. Throw ideas out, get to know what everyone else does, and we'll gradually get an idea about what we're doing. I'll be posting threads soon over in our private forum where we can figure out what recording capabilities everyone has, what music gear, online capabilities, etc. Now- where the hell is Cowbell Allen? polyt
Back in the saddle! I like where this is going. Tedster, I don't have Real Player at work. Is this the kinda style you usually do? I think I own every every Petty album. You're right Brakka, there's a big difference between pre and post Full Moon Fever. In terms of style, my vote is for post Fever. At any rate, off to Brakka's furom to see if I can get in yet...
