How to get up and running

Recommended Posts

I'm Dave, long time lurker in these forums, and TOTALLY PSYCHED about getting this community online in the Track Exchange!

Yes, I do work for Rocket, but I also play, record a lot, and use Logic, Cubase and Pro Tools.

To Download and Register go to this link:

Download and Register with the MusicPlayer Track Exchange

Currently there are free versions of Logic and Cubasis available at the URL above. The free Logic software is Mac and PC compatible, Cubasis is PC only.

I do QA at Rocket, and know a lot about the ins and outs of the system, and read these forums with my coffee every morning, so if you need some questions answered, I'll chime in.

I'm looking forward to seeing you people online, and exchanging tracks!

Thanks for your input so far and please keep it up. Folks are excited about Rocket but also have lots of questions. It's good to know you'll be there with expert advice.

Cheers,

Emile

I am thrilled a Real Rocket Person will be here in case I run into trouble. Not, of course, that I've EVER used any software that didn't work immediately and perfectly, right out of the box http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ok... don't move, Craig... You've just taken either an overdose of your own medication, or someone else's medication, but I think we can talk you down before your computer crashes again and bursts your bubble. Otherwise this could get messy... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yes, but it is no where near as powerfull as the full blown Cubase, first, no Save localy ... although you can "save" to Rocket. Many other limitations apply, track count, insterts, plugins .....

Still, it's cool if you want to get into the Track Exchange and throw some stuff arround.

FRICKN FRACKIN #@$@#!@#$@#!$!#@$!@#$!$*!!!!! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/mad.gif

Well Dave, I Downloaded the free cubase version and rocket control and got those installed o.k. But once again when I try to log on to the network I get a message saying "IE cannot download 198.rcn from my.rocketnetwork.com". This is the exact problem that kept me from getting on to Rocket before, after contacting tech support way back then (this was many months ago) I was told that it was indeed a bug that was found with PC's and that it would be dealt with in due time. It's apparently still there http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/frown.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/frown.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/frown.gif

Please let me know if they ever get that fixed.

Gnab dabit!

I've heard of this once before, but we were never able to reproduce this behavior in house.

Please contact me via Email with your, OS version, Browser version, CPU and Memory information.... I'd like to solve it.

the file "nnn.rcn" is a Rocket Control Navigation File. All it contains an address of the session, it opens with Rocket control, and Rocket control goes to the session.

A simple operation, that should not fail eh ...

Dave,

before i fill out that large form, and go through all the hassles of trying to get everything working, could you answer some basic questions.

I've read the other threads, and have been to the Rocket network site, but I'm still pretty confused:

1 http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifo actual audio files get exchanged? In realtime?

2: What size files can be sent.

Must the data be compressed, or are we talking about 24-bit 44.1?

3: What format must the data be in? (session data only, contiguous SD-II or Wav files, etc etc etc etc. It must be only "participating" software? If I have Protools and my friend the drummer has Cubase, we're stuck? What about sending a reference 2-mix instead of proprietary session data?

4: what technology must I alrweady have? Must it be a DSL connection? -I am too far from the hub so this is out. Will Cable-modem or even 56K work?

I think this basic info should be clearly listed at the top of this forum.

Hope you can help,

thanks.

Yes and no, yes audio files are exchanged. No (I think) we do not stream files from point to point... we send them as fast as your connection will handle, but we do not play them as they are sent.

This is not a point to point live audio thing. It's more of a data exchange mechanism built into your DAW.

2: What size files can be sent.

Must the data be compressed, or are we talking about 24-bit 44.1?

Any Size you like, we have a compression codec you can use (similar to MP3), or you can just send the raw audio with no compression. 16/44.1 to 24/96, whatever format your DAW uses ....

3: What format must the data be in? (session data only, contiguous SD-II or Wav files, etc etc etc etc. It must be only "participating" software? If I have Protools and my friend the drummer has Cubase, we're stuck? What about sending a reference 2-mix instead of proprietary session data?

At this time interchange between DAW's is not possible. Emagic has coded to our standard for interchange, no one else has. Any data from your DAW can be sent.

A track that contains a mixdown of other tracks could be sent. Or a track that has 37 regiond from 10 files that are mixed AIFF and WAV formats with automation and plugins routed to a bus and submixed ... etc...

And, Cubase and Pro Tools will not interchange data.

4: what technology must I alrweady have? Must it be a DSL connection? -I am too far from the hub so this is out. Will Cable-modem or even 56K work?

Computer, DAW software that has RocketPower, and an internet connection (any kind) is what you need. Rocket work can be done on a 14.4 modem ... if you want .... it will take a long time to post data but will work.

The faster your connection to the internet the better.

I think this basic info should be clearly listed at the top of this forum.

Hope you can help,

thanks.

I think Emile posted this URL, but here it is if he did not:

It contains answers to these questions and more.

Hey Dave -- I'm embarrassed to say I have not yet used Rocket except waaaaaaay back in the early days when it was MIDI only. But I want to get started, I need some means to collaborate with my musical buddies over in Europe.

I currently have Cubase 5 running on the PC. As you can imagine, I cannot function without a working computer, so I wanted to know if there are any "gotches" I need to look out for before I go and register -- any programs that are incompatible, DLLs to watch out for, that sort of thing. If not, well, as soon as I get a chance I'm going to check this puppy out for real.

I think the Rocket concept is fantastic, but as of several months ago I heard that it wasn't quite ready for prime time. Has using Rocket become a relatively seamless experience, or are there areas I should watch out for? I really want this to work, I need it!!!!!

The worst issues I know about are:

Cubase + Rocket + Windows 2000 Service pack 2 = Crash on launch, resinstall Cubase to get it to work again. Bad one, seems to be a bug in both programs.

The other issues are Mac to PC posts in live update situations (both users online) do not work with AIFF file from the Mac. If you reload the session the files come in, or if the part is moved on the track the files come in.... bad one ... we are trying to release a fix soon.

Other than that .... Cubase is an ...... erm ... interesting product to do QA on. There are many wrong turns one can take, it will take some getting used to avaoiding the pitfalls .... but I think you can do it.

We are in the middle of developing our next generation system, it will be out "Soon", I think that the clunk factor will be significantly reduced in the next rev.... until then .... please bear with us http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I hope to see you online!

Even if it's not perfect yet, it will still be invaluable for me. I don't have Windows 2000 so no worries there, and I'll be working almost exclusively with WAV files, so no problems there either. I know what you mean about Cubase but I've used it for years and know how to tickle it to make it happy. Hey -- any chance of a Rocket version of Cakewalk's SONAR? I've been using it a lot lately.

We have talked with Cakewalk, and thats about all I can say at this point ... however ... you could nudge them, send em a mail .... I think there are more than a few Cakewalk users that would like to get connected...

What I can say is, we had a bug with a similar look and feel, that was fixed, and I have confirmed the fix. We have not yet reproduced your problem in house, but we have had 2 other reports of the same issue.

I hope to have a work around for you soon.

As a long time user of Rocket technology since 1994 (yes, really!), I can vouce that the current version (2.3) is very easy to use, and I hear the next gen will be superb, so if there was ever a time to check it out, the time is now http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

one little disclaimer: I work as an online facilitator for rocket, based in Australia (which proves who well the software works!). I am no tech guru but use the software for hours a week, so always happy to help where I can. However Dave is DA MAN as far as tech stuff goes http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
