Botch.
My local band and the wives/girlfriends went to an outdoor show last night to see Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Because of our work schedules we got to the "festival seating" show kinda late and the lines to the bathrooms ended up running right in front of us, we couldn't see the stage for crap. We were also threatened by a beautiful lightning storm (one of the best I'd seen in Utah) but it never really dumped any rain on us. But man, just to lay out on your back, watch the lightning, listen to banjo/funk bass/strange drum/saxophone music, while eating my girlfriend's Alabama-style fried chicken and drinking Merlot, man, that's one of those shows, even though I couldn't SEE it, that I'll remember forever. If you get a chance to see the Flecktones, I highly recommend it! (the sax player played two saxes simultaneously MUCH better than I remember Edgar Winter ever doing it, very musical). :thu: :thu: :thu: Botch "Eccentric language often is symptomatic of peculiar thinking" - George Will www.puddlestone.net
Groeg
Victor Wooten played here a few weeks ago at a very small local club. Great show. He had a special guest come up to play sax....Branford Marsalis, who just happened to move to Durham, NC a few months back. Those guys can really play. Make sure and check out Bela's DVD live concert. You'll be amazed at Victor's bass solo of Amazing Grace. Tedster
I saw a cool lightning show here last summer...Tom Petty. Wasn't Bela Fleck...and the lightning just got going as the show was ending, but it was indeed very surreal. progfusion74
Yes, Jeff Coffin (sp) does make a great addition to the Flecktones. Love his playing style, which really complements the other 2 (or 3. I am still not a futureman fan). That said Victor Wooten could stand there alone all night and I'd go watch. prog http://www.indiegrooves.com/dnm/images/dnm_small.gif My Blog
whitefang
Saw Bela Fleck several years back. He was opening for somebody, I can't recall who. And I can't recall who because Fleck was that impressive. Last time that happened was in '74, when a nobody group called Journey opened for a group of Yes psuedo-clones named Starcastle. We all left half way through Starcastle's set, it seemed that anti-climatic. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left! Kendrix
I consider Wooten to be about the best bassist on the planet today. Wish i could have been there. Check out some tunes here: http://www.garageband.com/artist/KenFava
Bobro
Saw Bela Fleck a couple of years ago, at an outdoor festival. Wooten kind of stole the show, but I did want to hear more of Bela. Had the first CD when it came out, then somehow lost track of the band, then about 10 years later I was cruising the promenade and there they were, jamming away! Great show. -Bobro
Kris
A buddy of mine popped in a Victor bass instruction video... It is SICK... the whole video is him and another sick bass player trading licks and jams and stuff... Speaking of sick bass players, I'm gonna see Oteil tomorrow... along with Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes on guitar... oh yeah and the Allman Bros band!!! :p Kris My Band: http://www.fullblackout.com UPDATED!!! Hanshananigan
I saw Bela Fleck and crew several years back at an intimate outdoor show in Philly. I can't say I remember much, but it was cold and rainy, and I was drunk :freak: . I think I missed a good concert... These days I only drink at shows that require such behavior- like the Drive By Truckers or that rowdy Irish band with whats-his-name. Or if my girlfriend drags me to see Barry Manilow... PBBPaul
I've seen Bela Fleck a few times as well. The best show was just the three of them at a small club here. In the middle of the show, they did a true "unplugged" set where they came out into the middle of the audience, sat with us and played. Bela on acoustic banjo, Victor on a cello and Future Man on an actual conga. No amplification of any kind. You could have heard a pin drop between notes. Even though I am pretty much of an instrument purist who doesn't have much use for synthesized sounds, I am a Future Man fan. Drumitar notwithstanding, his "percussion" is very musical (if occasionally over the top). Chrono
Geo, I went to the Victor Wooten show you're talking about blithely expecting to buy tickets at the door. After all, it's a Tuesday night and it's some jazz banjo player's bass player's spinoff band. Well, it was soooooo sold out. I hung out at the door hoping to find someone trying to unload a ticket...that had worked fine for me previously at a Burning Spear appearance at thatsame club. Yeah, me and about
Chrono
Oops, accidentally engaged the ejection seat for an uncompleted first draft. Let me try this again: Groeg, I went to the Victor Wooten show you're talking about blithely expecting to buy tickets at the door. No way. Now I learn that Branford Marsalis was there as well. Um-hmm. Let that be a lesson unto me. I did see a guy with dreadlocks and a bright day-glo guitar going in. How was he? -Chrono

Groeg
Hey Chrono, Sorry for not responding earlier. Work has been hectic this past week. Victor's brother Reggie had crazy hair and a captain's hat on, and was playing a crazy looking orange guitar. Another dude in the club brought his yellowish?(it was dark) bass for Victor to sign. Could have been this dude. We should get together some time for lunch. I work in the park right off S. Miami. Let me know. Dogfur
Yay! I just found out I'm going tonight to see them! ( the babysitter came through! ) Just about my favorite act out there now, extremely high caliber musicianship. Bela is simply superb, Victor has set the level for what a virtuoso bassist is, and Jeff Coffin is a perfect fit for that group. I've been doing the 2 horn thing for years ( trust me, I'm certainly no Rahsaan! )and am looking forward to seeing how Jeff Coffin handles it. I've even learned to appreciate Futureman, although I certainly would enjoy hearing him play a real drum set. Man, this is gonna be great! Woof! Dogfur
I'm back -it was a wonderful show. Victor did a solo delay loop funky blues into Amazing Grace that just brought the house down. Jeff Coffin played tremendously, showcased on an especially out new tune "Sherpa" that had him doing multiphonics, overblown notes and squeaks and powerful double sax harmony lines. Bela was wonderful as always, ending the show with a solo performance that included parts of John Lennon, Vince Guiraldi, and a full blown reading of a J.S. Bach solo Violin partita. Just mind-blowing. Futureman is now playing a little more acoustic drums and cymbals, although mainly performing on the drumitar and other sample triggers. His performance was excellent as well. I love seeing inspiring stuff like this - Good Night All! Woof!
