Flaming Lips Someone had recommended this on this board awhile back, it is really different and I can't stop listening to it! No Doubt The Curve started a thread about the single "Hella Good", its catchy as the flu and my band is now going to learn it, I can hardly wait!! Red Hot Chili Peppers Their latest. The first couple of listens I was ready to send them off to Vegas (sha la la harmonies?!?) but its really growing on me. Vertu Jazz/rock fusion with a violinist, this was a Featured CD in Keyboard awhile back (I'm to the point where I automatically buy the monthly feature, Keyboard's taste is very like mine, I guess. Liquid Tension Experiment both discs, just to keep me humble. This band is most of the instrumentalists from Dream Theatre, with Tony Levin on bass, and humans should not be able to play like that

Some old jug band from the 1930's. I forgot the name, but they rock! Even has a song called "The Crazy Insane Blues." For those who are listening to the Tabla Beat Live cd, I was at the show! It was a free outdoor concert at Stern Grove last summer here in SF. We had one of the coveted picnic tables with a superb view, and the weather was perfect (usually it is foggy, especially in the summer  ). We sat and drank wine and ate truffle infused cheese like yuppies while our minds were melted by what was going on. The sound (I think mixed by Oz) was excellent. No contest, the highlight of last summer. My friend even recorded it on his mini-disk, I did a down-and-dirty mastering job and gave a copy to each at our table. I saw Arrested Development there a month ago, not quite as mind blowing. :D

The new Andrew W. K album is great; it's a textbook of things that people here say not to do, but it's a modern classic. Also the Toby Mac Momentum album is getting a lot of play- beware- it's 'christian' music- but has some of the best production, sounds, and creativity I've ever heard. Maladroit's getting a lot of play too ;)

progfusion: the radio transmissions album is mostly "dub" with trumpet, some keys, and various "effects" sort of ambient with driving dub bass/drum lines. pretty cool. i have a *ahem* borrowed version so don't have the liner notes to see who's exactly on it. dont' worry folks i always end up buying a cd if i like it enough.

What would be even better would be if Trilok Gurtu joined them for that show :) prog

I have a 6-CD changer in my car and rotate the CDs pretty much every week. So it's easy to give my list... Carl Cox - Global. Cox is great, Global is great. His stuff is like a melodic freight train passing by. Electric Highlife (various artists). Two things are guaranteed to put me in a good mood: African pop music and Soca/Zouk/Punta. This CD is raw and wonderful. Naxos World is a pretty good little label. Crystal Method - Tweekend. I was disappointed by their debut, but this is the real deal. Nice and funky. Cirrus - Counterfeit. One of my favorite bands stretches out, adding female vocals and some moodier tunes (no "Drop the Break" this time). But it really gets under my skin, it's music that seems to work in any context. Kylie Minogue - Kylie. I have a weakness for good synth pop, unfortunately this isn't. No real songs, no real endings, no real soul. The only reason why it's still in rotation is the vocal processing is totally state of the art, I'm learning a lot from it. BT - Rare and Remixed. This is really growing on me. At first it seemed to slick, too pat. But there are things going on underneath the surface that keep drawing me back.

You're right about the 'state of the art" vocals on the Kylie album. The different kind of vocal production interested me, but you're right about the rest of the album- I was dissapointed as well.
