sidereal
I know there's a substantial difference in price, but here's my situation.... I'm thinking of selling my D-112 and buying an RE20. I hear great things about the RE20 on kick drums, and I also need something that's a solid performer on voice (mostly voiceover and narration for video work). I figure... kill two birds and all. Anyone have thoughts on the difference between the two on kick drums. Is it simply a matter of taste, or is the RE20 that much better? Just for the record. The RE20 is a much better mic in pretty much every way possible, unless you really like that basketball "boing" you get from the D-112. The RE20 will give you a good natural sound. And it's one of the most popular voiceover mics on the planet. The only caveat is that you may be used to the sound of the D-112 and the RE-20 will sound so much different that you won't like it. Any chance you can borrow or rent an RE-20 first to try it out? For what it's worth, I don't think Dan's post was unhelpful. In fact, I think he pretty much sums it up nicely. -- Rob I have the mind of a criminal genius.....I keep it in the freezer next to mother. joeq
the RE-20 is not only a great kick mic, but it is really useful on vocals and horns. The D112 tends to make every kick drum sound like a D-112. If you dig that sound, it is a quick, convenient solution. The RE-20 is a much drier mic than the D-112, you will have to add a significant amount of EQ to get the same low end, The RE-20 does not have that Kick Drum curve built in. They are really quite different approaches for kick drum mics.
