Blue Strat
I'm going to start working on a home studio, and I'm wondering about what I need to do to get my drums to sound right in the room. The room my drums are in now doesn't sound all that great. The walls are bare and I guess I'm getting too much natural reverb from them. BlueStrat a.k.a. Blue Strat
Yeah, the drum forum is a dead room most of the time. BlueStrat a.k.a. "El Guapo" ...Better fuzz through science... http://geocities.com/teleman28056/index.html
Big Red 67
Have a drum stick and yer brain stops clickin'? Not my view, just funny. I use carpet pad, then I add reverb back in with a little chorus. Sounds pretty. Have you posted this in the studio forum? Big Red 67
How do you get the "origially posted by" thing to come up? My quotes never do that. Big Red's Ride Blog

Carpet pad is the worst for drums, and adding reverb back in with a cheap effects unit just cheeses the whole thing out. Bluestrat, you should ask this question on Ethan Winer's forum, you'll get some good answers about room treatment. Short answer, in a small room you need to kill some of the early reflections and trap the bass, without making a totally dead sounding room. Carpet padding, blankets, foam etc. do NOT work for this purpose - they just kill the high end while doing nothing for the low... resulting in really muddy dead sounding drums. Fortunately you are pretty handy and can build yourself some proper bass traps. Is your room carpeted?
Big Red 67
Reverb should not be heard, just there. If you can make it sound natural. Sides I am on a budget. You should have heard the room before the pad. It was a horror. I definitely did not do the whole room and have experimented with the setup alot. There is a divider in the room (a support beam) that if the drums are under the whole sound goes phase crazy. I have a live end and a deader end so it has two distinct drum sounds in one space. I isolate the other amps in other rooms so I can have the players together. Big Red's Ride Blog
Lee Flier
Well that's cool if you're happy with your sound, I just would not recommend carpet padding to anyone... and you can get a million times better sound than that for not much more money. Blue Strat
I haven't started on the bonus room (a.k.a., "the studio") yet, so I don't want to do anything permanent to my spare bedroom. Are the bass traps like a piece of foam angled in the corners of the room? I saw something like that in a catalog, and it shouldn't be too difficult to come up with a non-permanent way of doing that. Yeah... you don't want to use foam though, you want rigid fiberglass. You can just get some 2x4 panels of it (Owens Corning 703 or 705), wrap some muslin cloth around them and put them in the corners... you can also build a pine frame to go around some panels and hang them on the walls with picture hangers.
