ihategarybettman
When I mention to other drummers that one of my favorites is Phil Rudd of AC/DC, half of them look at me like I'm crazy and the other half just nod knowingly. I'm a "less is more" kind of guy and I've always looked at Phil as the Charlie Watts of hard rock. Also, over the years, AC/DC has certainly been better with him than without him - what do ya'll think?
rebonn
I'd say he steered AC/DC into what they are today as Ringo did for the beatles and is just as under rated. www.blairsdevillestudios.com

HiRoller
Phil Rudd rules. Some people goof on him because he plays so simple, but IMHO he plays exactly what the song calls for. my band: Mission
Sean Shannon
It's not only that Phil plays just what is needed, but his feel is wonderful. He has a certain "hang time" to his big crashes and backbeats. No rushin there, more an emphasis on big spaces and the "back side" of the beat. I read recently where a busy engineer ran "Back in Black" through beat detective, and it sped up the choruses. So it goes to show that with a great feel, a click isn't necessary. You know, it's funny, but if you are used to playing busier music, as I am, and you try playing exactly what he plays, it is an exercise is control. I really have to think about every crash and accent, because chances are, Phil didn't play it! Phil is underrated, but not by me. Rik
I mean huh? What is a "beat detective", and why did it speed up the choruses?
Sean Shannon
Beat Detective is a process in Pro Tools TDM systems that allows an engineer to "quantize" audio tracks, much like quantizing MIDI tracks. Aligns the performance to a tempo grid, like the beat (think click or metronome). It can take a performance that is fluctuating in tempo, and line it up so it is steady and on the beat. Apparently he ran Back in Black through Beat Detective, and it sped up the choruses. The feel is so big, if you lined it up to a tempo grid it was slightly behind. Many drummers rush the choruses slightly, some even on purpose, to give the track lift, but Phil did not, and the results were awesome.
