adam b_dup1
The kit im using right now is a Yamaha stage custom standard with matte natural color and lately i've been looking to find a new floor tom so i can get a nice 2 rack and 2 floors because i've been playing with 1 rack and 2 floors, but the only way i do that is taking my larger rack tom and mounting as a floor tom, so obviously i have to downtune it a lot, but it actually works nice, but i would really rather like to have two real floor toms. So i checked out the floors on musicians friend and found the floor toms off of the the excact same kit as mine and in the same color, so i was like bonus!! but then i looked at the price and it said 250$so i thought that was great but then i checked it out and only found out that the 16" floor is 250 but if i want an 18" its freaking 400$$$!! (my kit came with the 16", need the 18") i've been drumming for almost two years so i dont have too much experience in sizes and prices, so im asking the experts...is that right? a 150 dollar difference for only 2 inches? plus if i would get it, would i be getting ripped off? or, do you know a site where they could be cheaper? please give me some advice here, thanks. .....bonham
coyote
18" floor toms are usually specialty items, so they cost more. The problem is that they are too big for a stick to get a good response if the drum is tuned down into the range most folks want, so not many drummers use 'em. You may be able to get a 14" for much less $$$ and use that as your second floor tom. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. Lee Flier
Yeah, what coyote said. No, you're not getting ripped off. But let me ask you... is there some specific reason you feel you need to have 2 racks and 2 floors? If you've only been playing a couple of years, it might be wiser to work hard at developing a great feel and groove with a simple kit, and then add later if you still really feel you will benefit from having more drums. You may end up deciding you don't need 'em after all, and save your money for some percussion or some other really cool and different thing. djarrett
Lee has a great point, however ... if you are stuck on needing another floor tom, you may want to consider ... just getting a second 16" Lots of great drummers used two of the same size toms. They just tuned one down a step. This would give you the second tom, and keep your price in line at the same time. Hope this helps. DJ
adam b_dup1
well i do like using 2 racks and 2 floors, i have an extra cheap tom and i have set them up as 2 rack and 2 floor and i love that setup, and i find myself using every tom nearly as much as the others and it does improve my playing by a lot and also have learned many different new types of fills and licks, so i do know i like playing with that setup the main reason why i would want a new floor is becausei have to downtune my one tom so much to be a floor that is too loose and makes rolls much harder, plus you can criticize me all you want but i do prefer the big boomy bonham sounding toms and with that rack tom as a floor it doesn't match up well with my floor. now that i hope thats cleared up all im asking was about getting a new floor tom and you guys helped me out there with the sizes, and i talked to some friends and they told me 14" would be perfect, but where could i be able to get one that would match up with my kit and its color well? (yamaha stage custom standard, matte natural) so could you guys please help me out with that one? .....bonham
Lee Flier
Hey, I love the big boomy Bonham sound too! But ya know, Bonham only used one rack tom. He just used larger drums in general to get that sound - a 14" rack, 16 and 18" floors, and a 24" or even 26" kick. I don't know if you'll be happy with the smaller floor tom if that's the kind of sound you're after.
