Adamixoye
Hi, I'm a bassist/guitarist and I have a brother who is a beginning/intermediate drummer. I was wondering if a 6" Sabian Splash for $20 is a good deal to get him. I know Sabian is a mid-level brand, but I don't know for sure what series of cymbal this is...perhaps someone could enlighten me. Anybody have any opinions? I believe that is the greatest reply I\'ve ever read! I\'m not even joking. -- justinruins
ECBRules
Best thing to do is figure out what cymbals he has and get something comparable. You can't mix cheap and expensive cymbals. Well you can, but it doesn't sound that good. Chances are you're o.k. if the has the sabian b8 series, but get a bigger one like a 8 or 10 inch because a 6 inch is going to get wasted fast. http://www.kennyruyter.com/old/cowmix.mp3 <- Cowbell fever REMIX oh damn!!! http://www.eastcoastbands.com aka: ECBRules . thisOLDdude . keny . Adamixoye
Actually, he already has a 10" splash. He loves cymbals though (he is only 14). I do not know what brand/series his other cymbals are. Like I said, he's beginning/intermediate...I don't think that sound quality from mixing cymbals is his biggest concern at this point (one of my best friends is also drummer and I've concluded that a drummer's attention to sound quality is far beyond what others would notice...just like I am with bass and less so with guitar). But the fact that, as a 6", it might get trashed easily is a concern (I think it is the B8 series, I'll have to check), so thanks for pointing that out. For $20 is it still worth it? I believe that is the greatest reply I\'ve ever read! I\'m not even joking. -- justinruins
ECBRules
20 bucks is cheap for a cymbal. Make sure it has no dents in it before you buy it though. It might also be cool if you got him a chinese cymbal the Wuhan chinas are really inexpensive. Also it's cool to have 2 crashes, and if he doesn't already have two, that's the next logical step. http://www.kennyruyter.com/old/cowmix.mp3 <- Cowbell fever REMIX oh damn!!! http://www.eastcoastbands.com aka: ECBRules . thisOLDdude . keny . I'll enlighten you. SABIAN is not a mid-level brand. Nor is Zildjian, nor is Paiste, nor is ... you get the point? They all make mid-level series cymbals, as well as entry-level and pro-level series. $20 for a Sabian splash all depends on what level of cymbal it is. If it's a Sabian HH ... then yes, $20 is a great deal. Drummer Cafe - community drum & percussion forum
digitaltoast
It'll sound good for a year or two if you are lucky.
djarrett
Well, just as with any brand of anything ... (cars, drums, computers, etc.) Sabian has varying degrees of quality.B8 is a beginner grade. B8Pro is better. AA, AAX, and HH are all Professional grade cymbals.Carefully check this cymbal for dents or cracks. Hold it over a light source for cracks.Additionally, a small crash like this is fragile even for a pro drummer. You must know how ... and how-not-to play one. Striking a tiny splash the incorrect way can lead to cracking, or folding the cymbal.All-in-all, if you suspect something to be too good to be true ... it probably is. A great cymbal is a great investment. You should be able to go online to any great pro drum shop and save at least 50% on any new cymbal.Hope this helps,DJ
where02190
Sabian is a respected name in cymbals. I fit sounds good, and you think he/she will like it, buy it. it's only $20. Better yet, get them a gift certificate to the store, and let them choose for themselves. Hope this is helpful. Hope this is helpful. NP Recording Studios Analog approach to digital recording. ECBRules
Bravo!! I can't tell you how much I would've rather gotten money for equipment than getting all those stupid irrelevant presents. The Paddledrums, The Drum Books, the list goes on and on, when all I wanted was something practical. gift certificate is definately the way to go. You don't buy an artist painbrushes or a mechanic tools for their birthday. dayvel
Sabian makes some great cymbals, the B8's are not among them; they sound like crap. Get the gift certificate.
