Old GK

I've just acquired an old GK RB-400 for nothing. Not sure of this thing. Is it worth keeping and playing around with? Sounds like crap through the 2X15 I have but have been thinking about junking that cab for a 4X10 or 6X10. Should I just junk the GK too. I dont have a whole lot of extra cash to spend on a complete setup. BTW, the bass I use is a 70's P-bass with EMG pickups.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to our little club.

Care to trash that P? :D

I certainly think that GK is a worthwhile project. The way you talk, I don't know if the cab is good or bad, or what kind of "crap" sound you are getting.

Can you isolate the problem for us? And describe the bad sound; somebody here might be able to track it down.

Yep. I'm the other voice in the head of davebrownbass.

In general, the GK 400 should sound fine. It's a classic design. Congratulations on getting it for nothing.

The music school where I use to teach has one which pretty much has been running continuously for 20 years.

Don't junk the GK. If you don't like it, someone will buy it from you.

Yes. you scored. I used to use an RB400 with a single 15 cabinet for gigs so I can attest to it's worth. If it sounds that bad I would look at the speakers involved or perhaps there is something either gone or getting ready to go inside.

Wanna make a quick $50? Sell it to me.

I have nothing nice to say so . . .

I'll never give up that P-Bass/ good solid '77 with EMG's, Badass bridge, and a brass nut. Only thing I've tried that comes close is a Music Man, one day I'll throw one of those in the mix  . I gave up playing altogether for a few years ago but wanted to get back into it and my old SVT does'nt work :( .So a friend flowed me the GK. After playing around with it, I think I'll be OK with the amp, though I do want to go from 15" speakers to 10".

I've heard about the legendary reliability of the GK and there is something to be said for that!

Good call. The GK and the SVT are different animals. Play around with the GK and you'll find a sound that you like.

So what's wrong with the SVT?

My whole trick is to keep the tune well out in front. If I play Tchaikovsky, I play his melodies and skip his spiritual struggle. ~Liberace

Welcome aboard, ttomom!

Keep the bass and the GK head; they're good staples to depend on. The cabinet might be the problem depending on its construction and the speakers in it. Find out what speakers are in it and let us know. You should sell it and head towards the 4x10 design, but if you can afford a little more I'd by two separate 2x10 cabinets to make it easier to transport, as you won't always need 4x10 on stage.

I started it up after many years of no use and it worked, but it had two blown power tubes so it was'nt putting out much volume. So I bought a matching sextet of new tubes, put them in and.... nothing. No sound at all. Tried putting the old tubes back in as it did work with them and still nothing. I don't know what I could've done just by changing the tubes(I have done that in the past with no problems), but I somehow screwed the thing up.

I'll get it to a repair shop one day and see what they say. The GK is ok but I miss the big SVT sound.
