what do you guys think of geddy lee as a bassist. he in my opinion is great but i want to know what other bassist think. I was talking with a fellow bassist from universal who agrees that geddy is great and he told me that Rush is coming out with a 3 disc dvd called replay 3 on june 12th. it should be pretty amazing. I checked out a clip at http://www.rush.com/php/replay_dvd.php

Just curious...

Ha! Yeah, I've got a Rickenbacker, and a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass! To be honest, I didn't get the Jazz because of the association; I just tried it & really wanted it. But the Ric comes from the days when bass, for me, meant Chris Squire & Geddy Lee.

To answer the original question: yeah, Geddy is a great bassist. No one is universally liked, but this guy's reputation is about as solid as it gets.

But may I ask, Why do you ask? So you think he's great, so I think he's great...well, great; where does that leave us? Is there something particularly inspiring about his playing that you'd like to share?

The band and Phil Collins. Not my cup of tea, as you may have been able to ascertain.

That I had gleaned. :)

It was this that caught my interest: "His playing fits the bands needs. Pompous, pretentious, pseudo-intellectual."

I'd just never thought of Geddy's playing as any of those things.

Thanks for responding.

I've never warmed up to the band even when I was much younger and listened to bands that couldn't play as well as Rush. Just one of those things I guess. I thought it might be the high vocals, but I like Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe, and Neil Young. As a youngster I listened to Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath who played nowhere near as well. I even liked Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. Maybe it's that I don't think rock bands should use words like "unobtrusive" in their lyrics. I can listen and hear how well they play their instruments, but it just don't move me. Maybe I'm blaming Geddy for the fact that the drummer couldn't swing if you hung him. I feel like I should like them, but I don't.

way2fat, I'm with you. I bought 2112 soon after it was released but I just couldn't enjoy it either on an emotional or musical level. To everyone else, no one was better than Rush, but they just seemed to morph into a pop band (to my ears) after the 70's. I can't stand "their sound" either; it grates on me!

Yeah, it's lonely out here. Genesis always struck me tha same way - I should like them but I don't. I like some of Yes and don't like some. I like ELP. Grating is the best one word description of Rush's sound that I've heard.

Well said. Oddly enough, I started out as a big fan, learned all the bass parts. I bought a Ric because of Chris Squier, but I put a BadAss bridge on it because of Geddy.

Nowadays, I feel a lot like you.

Interesting how some bands, you just grow out of.

No slight against Rush in my mind, I still dig the occasional tune.

But so many other bands from those days still "do it" for me.

Thanks again.

Geddy Lee is awesome IMHO...if not just for his bass-playing, for the whole package...the man can play bass, sing, and play foot-pedals, do it all simultaneously, and do each one better than I can do any single one of them. I don't have a strong urge to play like Geddy though...I like to write and play groove-oriented music, and that's not the typical thing that Rush cranks out.

I like Rush's music, and I think Neil Peart (the drummer) is incredible. He was a major influence on me when I was a young budding drummer. A friend and I in high school used to transcribe the drums from Rush songs, and I have to credit that as part of my solid foundation in rhythm, which I have then gone on to apply to bass.

I would have to agree with Dave Sisk on all his statements. Rush's Grace Under Pressure tour was my first concert, 1985, and it was amazing for me to see these guys that'd I'd only heard on record playing this amazing music right infront of me, and thousands of others of course! I was in the grey section of Maple Leaf Gardens, the nose bleed section, and this is also where they filmed the concert.

I also started on drums and that really drew me to Rush, I then switched to guitar and once again Rush was right up there with great guitar players.

When I progressed to bass, there was Geddy Lee in all his glory playing amazing pieces, and as Dave mentioned whilst singing and playing pedals.

I don't always like their music now, I felt that after Signals, they really became more keyboard focused but still enjoy the live dvd's and am amazed at what Geddy can do. I can play parts of their tunes and am working towards full songs but am really enjoying the learning involved.

Geddy uses his first finger and thumb most of the time which is also quite a feat in my opinion.

To each their own, there are bands that I don't like their music but really respect their playing and ability.

I can't put him on the same pedestal with Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, Jaco Pastorius, Jeff Berlin, Billy Sheehan or Flea, but I like Geddy Lee.

Seriously, I do; otherwise I wouldn't have learned about 20 of Rush's songs for an old cover band. And I still run through some of the more difficult riffs as left/right hand coordination exercises. And I probably will get R30 and Rush In Rio and Exit Stage Left for my collection.

Anybody who can inspire you to practice more (like Geddy has for many players out there) is all right in my book. That's what it's really about: inspiration.
