DC Ross
Hi guys, The time has come for me to start looking for something new, and Ive read nothing but rave reviews for these basses. I understand that the Afterburner 1 has passive electronics, and the Afterburner 2 is active, but what are the sonic differences between the AB 1 and AB 2? (i.e. one is more aggressive, one is brighter or deeper, etc) Im just trying to figure out if the $1000 price difference is really worth it. Thanks! -DCR It's not simple to be simple. -H. ...
Go down to BassNW and check 'em out! They've got both in stock right now. Personally I like the Super J. That bass was telling me bad things. Things like "buy me" and "take me home". I had to tell it "no means no" and go about my business.
DC Ross
Uh oh. Hope my wife doesn't see that - she'll lock up our bank account I played the Super J last time I was there, but I wasn't totally impressed. The bass itself was beautiful, it was the feel of it -- but then again, I don't really dig the feel of a Jazz neck (blasphemy, I know). I checked out bassnw.com, and that ABII is gorgeous! JPJ
Are you sure that there's a $1,000 difference between the two? I have an ABI in stock and will be receiving my first ABII this afternoon, and those numbers don't sound right to me. As for the differences between the two, active vs. passive electronics is one factor. Different body and top woods also factor into the sonic differences between the models as well. Personally, I've been extremely impressed with every Dingwall I've ever seen and/or played, but make sure that you do your homework and find something that not only fits your budget, but also will deliver what you're looking for from a tonal perspective as well. blueberryhillbass.com Blueberry Hill Blog
zeronyne
WCuhna has that exact model. You may want to PM him about it. I hope he's lurking...I haven't seen him in these parts in ages. "For instance" is not proof.

That indigo AB1 is exactly the one I was really craving as far as looks. 5-string, indigo, flame maple. But availability and an unmatchable deal sealed it for me on my trans black burst. I can't say I'm unhappy in the least but I still drool over the indigo one. DC Ross, as far as the differences between the AB1 and AB2, I can only give sketchy descriptions at best because I never A/B'ed them. But when I played each one I was amazed at the toneal clarity and the overall feel. Greenboy told me once durring a phone convo that the preamp in the the AB2 is simply to compliment the natural sound of the different woods used just as the passive electronics in the AB1 best compliment the woods used in it. To sum up, the understanding that I got was that the sonic differences came more from the difference in woods than the difference in electronics. Like Bumpcity said, go try them both and get your own take on the matter. I have a feeling that my next Dingwall will either be a Super J or a Z2. That will probably be some time in the future though. Good luck and I hope you find a bass that fits you and will give you many happy years of music making. JonathanD
I wish there was a store that carried a decent bass selection in Indiana. This state ----. I have never seen a dingwall in person and I have checked most stores within 300 miles. Anyone know of any good places to look for basses is Chicago, IL? DC Ross
Well, yesterday I headed over to Bass NW, and fingered both the AB I and II (among others). The AB I sounded really nice, but I wasn't too fond of the maple neck or the finish. It was a soft maple body with a transparent honeyburst finish. The AB II was much more my style: Bubinga top & neck and Wenge fingerboard. It felt, looked, played and sounded very natural. It looks like the pic I posted above from Bass NW was removed from their site, and for good reason I'll post pics tomorrow BTW, I totally blame Brian for my new diet of Ramen noodles For those of you in the Seattle area, you can see it in action on June 11th at the Central for The Tailgunners' debut gig.
