OT: Test Drive Update: GOT IT!

ATM

Recommended Posts

Well, the other day my new room mate and guitarist suggested we go check out some Triumphs.

Yes, I tested one out.

These are large files, about 1.5 MB, so I'll let you click at your leisure.

The only thing missing off of this Triumph Rocket III Classic was the windshield. I don't care to pick the bugs out of my teeth. I was close to walking out (er, riding out) with it. But, I decided to wait till I paid off the truck this October.

To all of you guys with endorsements, find your local Triumph dealer and give this 2.3 liter monster a try. You'll be surprised!

www.Triumph.co.uk

First time I looked down at the speedometer, I thought that it must be wrong, then I decided that it was correct. Didn't seem like 60. Heck, it was too soon to be going that fast. Next time I took off, I looked down when shifting out of 1st and it said 40. I wasn't even winding it out!

Handling was delicious. Power was out of this world. I can't wait till I go down to pick one up later this year.

I'd love to test-drive one of those, but would never get one! They're just too big and heavy for my taste :)

That is an awfully large bike. I bet it weighs double what my POS Vulan 750 does.

I'm looking at getting a new bike once my knee is finished with rehab, but I'm looking more at something small, light & quick ala SV650 or Duc Monster S2R.

Good luck with the purchase...

Those bikes of today make the old and trusty CB-Four 750 appear like a mini-bike. Two weeks ago my brother traded in his old DragStar to one of these . He had to pick it up in another town and after less than a hundred miles on the road he ran into a "Kojac with Kodac" while passing a truck. They snatched his license on the spot but he got to drive the bike home with a temporarly license. They´ll keep it for one month and he also got a rather nasty ticket. Right now he´s sporting a bicycle and counting the days. He said that he wasn´t used to such power and didn´t really feel the speed. He was driving about 90 Mph, which is about 50% from the topspeed of the bike. Maybe this was a good warning since the outcome is a lot more serious in some cases. I think that the Yamaha and the Rocket have about similar HP-rating but the Triumph has even more torque. So be careful out there!

I´d like a Triumph myself, but would settle with a Bonneville. Though now all what I own is tied up in 390 cui of mid-60´s Detroit cast iron wrapped in two tons of nice sheetmetal.

PS. The main increase in biking accidents up here has been among guys around 50 and beyond, who don´t have much driving experience, but can afford fast bikes.

What ever...

I was looking for Mrs. ATM in the photos. Am I the only one who thinks pretty women and bikes go together? And not even a custom bass leaning against the handlebars...

I don't have the powerful urge to get a motorcycle; but I did have the powerful urge to get something fast and ridiculous.

So I got this:

Really startin to like the new V Star tho.

No crotch rockets discussed in this forum.

The Rocket is a super-cruiser.

The FJR is a sport touring bike.

The Duc Monster and Suzuki SV650 are standards.

For crotch-rocket, you are generally looking at I-4 bikes, the 600cc bikes have around 125 hp and the 1,000cc bikes have around 160-170 hp.

Sorry... I have had this argument way too many times with my Dad who still views bikes as he did when he rode in the 80's. There have been significant changes in the technology in the last 15 years.

Ten years ago, I was saving up to buy my new Jeep Wrangler. Didn't have girlfriend at the time, and kept one thing in mind, "Jeep first, Jeep first." Let me tell you, the ladies came out of the woodwork after said Jeep was acquired. Including the woman who I eventually got engaged to and sold the Jeep so I could move to England with (make sense?). Now, I wouldn't trade my overseas experience for anything, but I've had to rebuild my life without either the woman or the Jeep.

Moral of story: Have goal. Obtain goal. Self confidence acquired in obtaining goal makes one more attractive to the ladies. This time, will not sacrifice everything for a woman since I'm a bit old to be starting over, again.

Oh, and the custom bass? "Rocket first, Rocket first."

However, my guitarist was close, looking at the Bonnevilles. He's really into Dylan, and since we both grew up in Minnesota right next to Highway 61...

notice t-shirt.

And my first bike was a 1975 Honda CB750 Four. Recently sold cause I got sick and tire of spending so much money on it and not getting to ride it. Hmmmmm, may have to rethink whole "get girlfriend" premise. :D Oh well, can't live with 'em and all.

Funny that I mentioned just that bike and didn´t know you used to have one. I guess those were the benchmark bikes of the early 70´s so we older guys remember them well.

I worked in an emergency room too long to want a bike. Folks tend to die or be messed up for life on them if they or someone else too close to them makes even a small mistake. There are easier ways to go out, thanks very much all the same.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

Since my test drive, I have sat on a few other bikes, including a test drive of a V-Rod last Thursday. One thing I have noticed about the Rocket is, when I sat on it, I was able to stand it off the kickstand without putting my hands on the bike, just using my legs. Every other bike I've tried, not possible. I've had to grab hold of the handlebars and wrench each bike off the kickstand.

The Triumph is just balanced so much better.

Anyway, the ride on the V-Rod was nice. Nothing special about the used bike, and they were asking $17k. The new Rocket's MSRP is $16k. I'm still sold on it.

Sorry I haven't been around lately. There, that out of the way, here's the good news.

Found a good deal online at a Florida Dealer (motorcycle.) Called him, got the price down even lower. Called the local guy, they wouldn't play, so yesterday I called the guy north of Tampa and got the paperwork started over the phone while a buddy and I drove up. Picked up the bike, and drove it 180 miles back down.

Found out a couple of things while doing research. Largest motor in a production bike. "Argueably" the fastest stock production bike. 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. What a pleasure to ride. Yes it is big, but it's balanced, fast, and nimble. Sounds like a good bass, eh? And red and black!

I did the paint work on her for a client. That Triumph is screamin for a Bass Clef on the top of the tank ATM! :)

I'd have called if there had been more planning. The purchase was very last minute since the pricing was very good for a very limited time.

Jeremy: Actually thinking of adding a trailer hitch. Heck, my first Ford Ranger had a 2.3 liter and that hauled quite a bit, including another motorcycle and a U-Haul trailer.

Brocko: As much as I would like too, I'm going to keep her stock. Much the same way I don't put stickers or paint on my basses.

Well guys, I just couldn't resist:

Off to Bike Night tomorrow. :D
