Vinnie Colaiuta

Alright, I know it came out 12 years ago and I bought it back then, so this is a little late, but . . . inspired by the transcription in the May BP, I returned to listen to Vinnie Colaiuta's eponymous solo CD again (GRP).

I can't believe it's sat unplayed for so long - I'm listening to it again right now - great playing here.

Bassists on the CD - Neil Stubenhaus, Pino Palladino, Sting, Vinnie himself, John Pattitucci, Tim Landers and Sal Montilla.

I guess Vinnie can get whoever he wants!

On the same subject I hear an awaesome tape from a gig at the Baked Potato (LA) last summer featuring a trio of Vinnie, Mike Landau and Abe Laboriel - if they ever release anything . . .check it out!!

I have an interview he did with UK drum magazine Rhythm in about 1995, it was quite reminiscent of the Bass Player inteview with Prince a few years back - both talented, both difficult to decipher.
Now theres three of you in a band, youre like a proper band. Youre like the policemen.

I acknowledge the technical side of pure drummer records, but can never fully appreciate them. Whilst i notice the fine playing, i hardly ever remember a tune or song. These records kind of remind me of elevator music with a more technical side.

(Same with bass player solo records. Except for one: Victor Bailey - Low Blow.)

I will have to check these records out though. I can't resist.

Warwick Streamer Jazzman 5, Fernandes LEB-2

Ashdown ABM-300, Ashdown ABM 4x10

I know what you're saying Gab. For me, Vinnie's rises above that. I would definitely recommend a couple of Billy Cobham's and Lennie White's though as great 'drummer's albums'.

I've never been able to get into Victor's solo albums myself. Though I've enjoyed plenty of other bass led albums.

Hey Phil,

If you haven't done so, check out Chick Corea's "The Ultimate Adventure" cd that came out a couple months ago. It has Vinnie, Steve Gadd, and others with percussion galore. Carles Benavent tears it up on bass too; I assure you it is definitely worth checking out.

Vinnie is good. He makes it go for sure. I also have heard from several people that he is less than personable.

I'll have to check out that album.

It's always all about Gadd.

That having been said, I love me some Vinnie. I used to listen to his solo cd every night before work (at least) for 4 months.
