rumpelstiltskin.
i bought this record about a month or so ago. i listened to it a few times then. i liked it. but i just can't listen to the same thing every day. i have been listening to it more lately. the first time i heard "only", i knew i had to buy the record. it just took me a while. that bass riff is simple and sexy. one of the things i enjoy the most about the entire record are the array of great bass tones. none of the lines are flashy, but they're all really good. and there's a multitude of both clean and distorted bass tones, often on the same song. listening to this record, it occured to me there's really no one like nin. (i mean, besides pigface.) they have such a clever blend of synth and real instrumentation. anyone else enjoying this album? robb. because i like people. zeronyne
My favorite album lately. Every time he puts out an album, it's pretty drastically different. It drives the fanboyz nuts, but I think the paring down of his arrangements shows some confidence in his writing. By the way, I'm sure you know this Robb, but anyone who wants to take a stab at remixing or dissecting "Only" or "The Hand that Feeds" can download the separate tracks at nin.com. It's not the RAW tracks, but it's still fascinating to see how little orchestration is in that song. You can have just the drums, bass, synth bass, and vocals solo'ed, and it becomes hard to figure out what's missing. But back to the topic...it's a really great album, and yes, no one is doing accessible yet credible industrial music these days. Unless you consider Fear Factory to be accessible. "For instance" is not proof.
Thomas Wilburn
I think it's an interesting album compared to the previous two NIN albums. It's much more singles-oriented, as opposed to The Fragile and the Downward Spiral, which were (to my mind) meant to be listened to in one sitting. "Only" is such a great song, not just for the bassline but also for the bizarre lyrical rhythms. And I love NIN, but is it really industrial? It always struck me as dance music for people who hate dance music. Four String Riot the myspaces, we hates it
thanny XIII
It is a good album, reznor is a very talented musician. I've missed them like twice in salt lake now, dammit I need a cookie. rumpelstiltskin.
broken was a fairly industrial album. but i would say its relation to industrial much like sunny day real estate is to emo. if that makes any sense to anyone but me. i mean, it's clearly related, but it's so much better than what is generally accepted as industrial (in the case of nin) or emo (in the case of sunny day real estate). robb. because i like people. Bottomgottem
Trent Reznor is one of the more creative and listenable artists in that genre. I dig; very much. I have never had the opportunity to check out his show. I'm gonna look in to that Charlotte date. My whole trick is to keep the tune well out in front. If I play Tchaikovsky, I play his melodies and skip his spiritual struggle. ~Liberace
Bottomgottem
Damn. I've got a gig that night. My whole trick is to keep the tune well out in front. If I play Tchaikovsky, I play his melodies and skip his spiritual struggle. ~Liberace
espowari
Listen to "Pretty Hate Machine" all in one sitting. It's hard not to see the entire thing as one huge masterpiece. Back in 88/89, it was cutting edge to do what he did. Brilliant song crafting IMHO.
rumpelstiltskin.
pretty hate machine is a great record. i started with nin on broken, though, so (naturally) that is still my favorite. it's so compact and complete. i will have to miss the detroit show because it is my brother's 30th birthday party. plus, i am flying back home from europe that day. i will be very busy and very tired. robb. because i like people. Tenstrum
I think its an OK album. My favorite by them though is 'broken'. Something about that album just makes me want to run around and punch people in the taint! Tenstrum "Paranoid? Probably. But just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there isn't an invisible demon about to eat your face." Harry Dresden, Storm Front
