Nope. All the same material plus some additional stuff. Something to keep in mind when purchasing the DVD is this: it's a Joni Mitchell DVD. As such, the camera spends most of it's time on her. The rest of the time is spent on Pat Metheny, weird video montages, and the occasional shot of Jaco, Don Alias, Lyle Mays, and Michael Brecker.

edit: I neglected to mention that Jaco's solo is featured on the DVD and it is not on the CD. It's pretty much the same solo ideas that he was doing on the Weather Report 8:30 tour. Still very bitchin to see.

Yeah...

Shadows & Light is the CD and more, as bump mentioned. The sound is actually quite good for it's era, too.

My main complaint with it, is the "weird video montages" that Bump also mentioned. There's even this unbelievably tacky video sequence of a figure skater, at one point. Barf! You'll want to skip those segments for sure! But at least there's not too many of them. And the extra footage of Jaco, more than makes up for it.

But over all, as far as older but historically significant DVDs go, I put Shadows & Light right up there with stuff like Bob Marley's 'Legend Live', and the Band's 'The Last Waltz'. I can watch them over and over again, and never tire of them.

The music and the performances are truly timeless.

"Fingerstyle Funk" with Rocco Prestia - appears to be VHS only.

I'll 2nd the "Rush in Rio" concert DVD...everything on it is awesome!

+1 to Fingerstyle Funk

Also, there was a Victor Wooten video I saw at Sam Ash some time ago that I haven't been able to find (mainly because I don't know which one it was) but it was most impressive and enlightening.

I have to mention "The Kids Are Alright" if only because it contains the performance that made me a bass player - My Generation on the Smothers Brothers show. There's some other decent Entwistle stuff on there as well.

"Victor Wooten and Carter Beauford - Making Music" is pretty awesome IMHO...Carter is the drummer, and the DVD is from the recording of the "Yin And Yang" CD. Lots of very musical playing from both of them!

Rush is awesome, no doubt. And this month's BP and GP gave Rush fans a nice little transcription of 'Freewill'. :thu: for the coordinated effort

Just received and watched the Shadows and Light DVD last night. It is so inspiring. Methany and Pastorius are absolutely brilliant. Imagine having those two guys in your "backing band". Mitchell is pretty good too!

Absolutely!

It's definitely not just one of those DVDs you buy, just because there's lots of great footage of Jaco. Don Alias, Metheny, Lyle, Brecker, and Joni are all in top form at that performance, and all of those people are icons within the realm of their individual instruments.

When you think about it, it's not surprising that Jaco was happy to be in that band. A band of true innovators, yet who could play music that was approachable to the masses in the mainstream.

If you can't stomach the figure skater segment, at least turn off the video monitor and LISTEN to the song-- it contains some of Jaco's best, most expressive fretless lines on this DVD.

And cut Joni a little slack for her video segments-- this came out years before MTV, before music video was the established, slick product that it became later.

Hey Bruiser,

There was some great cinema and experimental film from that era though.

Nobody needed to cut away from Pat or Michael during the instrumental sections.

I'm a big fan of Joni's stuff; and Michael's and Pat's and Don's and obviously Jaco's.

I hated this DVD though.

I gave it away via this forum a while back to another poster.

I stick with the original album - which I love, at least then I'm not disappointed by the video.

Great gig, dodgy DVD
