g.
Saw X - Live In Los Angeles last night. Wow, I had forgotten how much sweat John Doe could pump through the bass while squeezing every drop of blood outta his heart singing. More energy than any old guy ought to be able to muster! Actually the entire band made me want to go out and tip over cop cars and write manifestos all over again. I gotta get me some of this reborne LA punk on DVD. Right now I'm crankin' my old albums. Great songwriting. Great playing. Sorry their music ever got the same moniker as that of the Sex Pistols. I'm moving back to the eighties as soon as I'm packed. . Mighty Thumb
Many years ago I had a girlfriend who was a big X fan. Actually, I think she was a big Exene fan. She turned me on to them back then. A good counter point to my Bad Brains, Germs, Black Flag, Fugazi, etc., skate or die, diet at the time. Since then both the band and the girl had drifted to one of the many unused corners of my brain. Thanks for the reminder, I will definitely check this out. I'm reserving my copy of your manifesto right now! Mighty Thumb
g.
Well, I like the working man ethic implicit in a lot of the X lyrics and feel. Never realized back in the day that the bassist was not only a singer, but a main songcrafter and the leader. Actually I'm getting more impressed by the bass playing even when NOT thinking about how he plays and sings at the same commited-to-both level, live. The drums and bass lock is good too, but doesn't sacrifice independence and bass fills. I never concentrated on the bass parts that much before... Billy Zoom really brought the good rockabilly chops and tones to the party and made it look easy. Always has the right hotrodded Fender or Marshall tones too. Love hsi use of the basic old tremolo and reverb effects. Exene? Well, she's looking a little older and was maybe weak at times considering the fire and attitude she'd delivered in the past. But she's still got a goddess chewing gum lurking in there. A couple of her bands since X have been pretty diverse and cool too. Jazzy in the Tom Waiits vein, roots C&W without the crass nashevillisms so prevalent now ... All in all, I hope the fun they had doing that DVD reunion will spark them all back up into some more playing and writing together. .
