Jam Band

While I post this thread in Bandwidth, I'd like to share this page with the bassists here. I made a myspace page for a jam band I was in that has been defunkt since Sep 2004. I think I had been playing bass for about 6 months at that time after a longggg break.

My timing isn't so hot, but I think I mask my many mistakes pretty well. :D

But I've never had another band with the same chemistry. We all read each other's minds and came up with some good stuff. It's all about the magic of 4 guys in a room just releasing tension, making music, going on ear and feel. No rehearsing, no sitting down to arrange, just playing.

For gear, all I had was my bass. Fender MIA Jazz w/ a BA bridge. Studio gear was Ampeg 1x15 cab, and Behrenger amp. The audio quality isn't the best, so it's best heard through headphones. Take a listen and let me know what you think! I'm a much different(and better, hopefully)player now, looking back I have a hard time believing that was me but after hearing the mistakes I'm assured it is, hehe.

my old jam band - get your headphones!

Yea, I'm not bad for white guy, huh? (No disrespect to anyone). Thanks a lot. I need to do more playing and less typing. I get way too emotional sometimes, I'm just a sensitive guy I guess. That's why I'm not in a band.

Going through all the negative ego-driven personalities I've met in music and playing in bands, I just ask myself why is it worth it? I did think about giving it up, but instead I'm choosing to give it another shot. If I sold all of my gear I would regret it dearly.

OK, that sounds better. I don't know why I care, but I hate to see people give up playing music. Yup, there are a lot of characters out there that you'll probably continue to deal with if you keep playing. But when you're in a band and that moment comes along when you all lock together, it's worth it. Everyone gets frustrated, everyone thinks they suck sometimes, but it is worth it.

If you do music for a hobby, then it needs to be fun unless you are a masochist.

I might also suggest that you make a quicker assessment. If the nutty musical types hurt your delicate sensibilities (really - I'm not being a wise guy), then set a faster timeline to decide whether the latest knuckleheads are worthwhile or not.

My only other bit of advise it to keep it as a hobby. If a bandmate shows up on time and is prepared (that includes things like sobriety), they don't have to be Mother Theresa. If they are always whining about their girlfriend (worse than most of us) or never have any money, go back to the list.

I know lots of musical folks on LI who have F/T jobs, families, etc. and who want to play. I know lots of people living various other lifestyles who want to play. Keep looking.
