frontlinebass
Here is my situation. I have been playing passive basses my entire life and have always needed a preamp. now though I have bought an Ernie ball stingray 5 and no longer need a preamp. so I want to get a rack mounted tube power amp. you guys know of any aside from the aguilar one? thanks. p.s. i did a search and didn't find anything. wurmhole78
Why do you feel that you don't need a preamp now that you have the SR5? Changing to an active bass still does not get you to the +4dB you need to drive a poweramp, especially not if you want to drive it into that nice warm distorted place. g.
Tube heads are the way to go in this case, because you DO need a preamp still. And the best bang-for-the-buck for a new one comes from Yorkville probably - unless you think you need more power. Personally, I don't think a lot of used vintage choices do much for a B string regardless of one's sonic preferences. .
jeremy c
Sorry, you probably still need a preamp. I do have an active bass or two which has enough power to drive a good pair of headphones (not walkman type). But without a preamp you will have not have any tone-shaping possiblities even if the bass will put out enough signal. Free download of my cd!.
