If you really want to try a bunch of them out, the search can take a while. At any given music shop there are usually limited options. If you're prepared to stop once you hear "the one" that makes you happy, then the length of the search depends on how quickly you arrive in a situation where you've got your bass plugged into said "the one". Now, without having done any of my own truly rigorous empirical testing, tube power adds a flavor that solid state power doesn't. But the weight and maintenance of tube power amps, as others have pointed out, make them an irrational choice for many of us.
