the upright bass a former teacher of mine had (well, has). the action was perfect, dark coloured wood, full-sized body, incredible amount of volume and sustain for the amount of effort used to pluck a note. that bass works WITH you, you hardly noticed it at all. bloody expensive too....

electric-wise i want this:

I really want a Warwick Corvette standard fretless 5 string. But it seems like I can only find em passive.

*possible dumb question following* Is a fretless bass supposed to be passive?

*possible dumb question 2 following* Can you change it to active?

Hey getz76, what models are each of those? I'm pretty sure I've played "#1" at Guitar Center, and I really liked it. Way out of my price range, but it's fun to dream.

Number 3 is on order after you just got that sweet Fender Jazz Deluxe V? Egads!

I'm really happy with my G&L Tribute L2500. Just got it off eBay and it's my first 5 string. It's also my only bass as I had to sell my beloved Schecter Elite C4 to pay for the Tribute.

All dream basses must be put on the backburner till I can afford a decent rig to play them through!

No. 1 is a Warwick Thumb 5 (neck-through). By far my favorite fretted bass.

No. 2 is a Rob Allen MB2-5 string. Mine has a maple top, not a walnut (or koa?).

And No. 3 is a Mike Lull. I believe that's a V5, I've ordered a M5V. It'll look rather similar, though.

The Fender Jazz V will eventually go on the chopping block; I'm trying to squeeze some mojo out of it first.

I'd like to get my CAR Lakland JO5 back from Lakland...

...but that'll be a while, since I just shipped it to them yesterday :(

I miss it already.

Hey Maury? Can I borrow your Lull (when it gets in) 'til mine gets back?

I'd be happy to be your drum tech. All I ask for is your candy orange Fender Jazz Deluxe V...

MOJO?

uhhh, I'll get back to you on that.

Very nice looking Lull... I've considered getting one, but it'd be blue, and we can't have 2 forumites with blue Lulls in their avatars, right?

At the moment I would like to try a Warwick thumb fretted bass. I played a passive Corvette Standard. It was ok. I think the active electronics would sound better. I love the wood they use. Are the old Wenge necks better than the Ovangkol necks used today?

Nice link, Eddie! I'll take a Double Dart.

My "Dream Bass" isn't manufactured; I'd like it to have a 5-string fretless:

Walnut body (possibly chambered) w/Lacewood top

5-piece maple/wenge/purpleheart neck; purpleheart fingerboard (semi-lined like the Godin A-5)

Aero E5PD soapbar in the middle/neck, Aero H5JD at the bridge; Thru-body stringing; maybe piezo in the bridge.

Anybody want to buy a kidney so I can afford it?

A Matt Pulcinella Level 5 semi-fretless would do in a pinch.

If / when you do, please give us a in-depth review of the fan-fretted beast! I guess a Dingwall Z2 would be my first choice for a new bass, but it's a bit too much coin to drop without being able to try it out first. Mainly the first few frets of the B-string are what scare me the most, as I need to have quick and easy access to them...

My first thought is to take the 3 hour road trip to visit Bill Conklin down the street. I'm sure he could hook me up with a pair fretted and fretless sweeties.

Off the shelf, I'd find a well-stocked G&L dealer.

I have the 4-string version. At first I thought I wanted active, but having played it a bit I'm fully convinced passive is good enough. The ONLY issue I have that active could alleviate is the pickup hummmmm. orienting myself correctly cures that, and then the bass sounds awesome.
