Sir Ethelred Hedgerow-Hedg
I have begun working on some dub ideas that I have. At the moment I'm just running them through with a drum machine. The problem is that I'm no expert on drums and I'm having trouble getting the right settings. Can anyone can give me some pointers about patterns, what hits what in what part of the beat/bar and things like that? The basics really, but with dub reggae in mind. I'll try and let you all hear some of it when I'm done. Cheers Bog visoko, a Rusija daleko
jeremy c
I have found this book to be very useful. But really what you need to do is sit down with a record you like and try to duplicate the drum part with your machine. That's the best way to get started. A very simple way to get a reggae/dub sounding drum part would be to take one of the standard rock beats that comes with your machine and use at half the tempo of your song. In other words, if your song is going at 110 bpm, pick a rock drum part and set it for 55 bpm. You may be pleasantly surprised by the result. Free download of my cd!. cloclo
I would also go down the listen-to-your-favorite-stuff-and-start-from-there-route. You'll get it down quickly enough and start personalizing from there. hmmm, deep, warm, mellow, dubby notes Marvelas Something

TShakazBlackRoots
Mmmh! Dub like all facets of Reggae music is what I call Specialist music. You must LIVE IT! Listen a lot closer, get as much Dub as you can get. Originally Dub was actually B-sides or instrumental versions of hit Reggae songs before it became a genre of it's own. Can't wait to hear your stuff. Sir Ethelred Hedgerow-Hedg
I think your right. I've tried to listen to as much as I can. I have a double vinyl called "400% Dynamite", you know it? It contains lots of origanal Jamaican dub/reggae/ska from the 60's. I believe it was a series. Also I plan a trip to London soon to visit some specialist music shops. I ve decided now to just start a band doing what I want. This will be the first band I have started rather than joined and the first band I will have played in outside the standard rock stuff. Ill definatly send stuff to anyone interested.
