cheap six?

Looking for an inexpensive yet decent-sounding six. Alembic is straight out (price!) :D

I've tried a Dean 12-string for fun, but thought it lacked a quality sound. Are their 6s any better? (At the time I was GASsing for a John Paul Jones-esque 8, and the Dean was NOT going to do it.)

I've seen Rogues online but not had a chance to play one. Worth a trip to the music store?

Some of the Yamahas look interesting. Any thoughts?

...or should I try to find a Groove Tool 7-stringer? (Probably out of my price range, though.)

Looking to use the extended range, mostly fingerstyle, but wouldn't mind something that can slap, too. Something roughly like a cheap Jazz might do, but I don't think 5 strings will be enough.

Sorry if this has been addressed here already; looking forward to your valued opinions.

Thanks for the offer, Nicklab, but it's a bit of a drive from Motown to you. ;)

I had a Dean 6 for a while...didn't like it. Although I think they've gotten better. Yamaha's are great. I have a Carvin fretless 6. I didn't get the deal JeremyC did, but they are well made instruments and very reasonably priced on the used market. I replaced the electronics, but passive they are great.

At about $600, I've been pretty happy with my Ibanez SR496. I really like the "flat plank" style Ibanez neck, rather than the "half-log" style most basses seem to have.

The SR496 has been replaced by the SR506, which upgrades the bass to include bart pickups *and* electronics.

I agree, the U-shaped neck on my Ibanez is really comfortable, even if it took some getting used to :)

Man, I'm a sucker for good performance at low prices! I just know those basses will sound good & play well. Almost makes me wish I could find a good reason to buy one :D

RicBassGuy: Can you put a dollar amount on "inexpensive"? That is, an approximate cap on what you can spend. $500? $300? $750?

A used Carvin 6 seems like a good idea to me.

I haven't played any Rondos, so I can't help there.

Peace.

You ask questions, and procure a return policy from the seller.

When buying on eBay, how do you avoid getting a warped neck, or doing anything about it if you do?

I purchased a cheap guitar and 2 good basses via Ebay so far, and all have been great transactions with excellent results. I asked both bass sellers prior to bidding about warpage, twisting, etc. and both were candid and helpful. Both basses (Warwick Corvette Standard 4 fretless and Tune TWB53 5-string) arrived in immaculate condition.

The cheap guitar aside, I wouldn't buy via Ebay if I hadn't already played those instruments elsewhere and loved 'em already. But I have declined to bid on items where I get any hint of a bad vibe.... if you get a "watch out" screaming at you from your gut, let this one go. Another will come along soon enough.

Sorry I haven't replied earlier. It seems everytime I've tried to get on lately the site's been down. :(

Perhaps unrealistically I am hoping to keep it closer to $300 than $500.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! :thu:

This wouldn't be so bad if I weren't gassing for a fully-loaded Bongo. :D

A bass is probably the only thing I would try not to buy on Ebay. Just for the fact that every instrument is different in its own way, and its best to play them before you commit. And returning stuff is always a hassle.

Well, I was at the store that I had previously seen this Spector 6 today, and they still have two of them. $489 without a case. If you want contact info for this store, LMK.
