JPJ
Willie, I'm really glad that you went with the Fat Stack/Big Single push/pull. As I said the other night, I was absolutely blown away by the change in tone just from lifting up on one knob! Also glad to hear that you're enjoying your new bass. Adrian, Not that you're looking for my opinion on your new Nordie ( ), but if you're going with some Fat Stacks, you gotsta' add the coil tap....gotsta' do it!!! blueberryhillbass.com Blueberry Hill Blog
bassaddik
Jay, i'm doing the dual coils on this one. The one he did that Horace has, the sunburst bolt on, sounded phenomenal, so i am afraid to mess with that formula... but i will certainly ask Carey about it.. thanks! of course i want your opinion, bro! _Sweet Willie_
Hey y'all, I had hoped to record some sound clips w/ a friend yesterday, but we didn't get to it. Another time -- maybe I'll hook up w/ getz76 to get that taken care of. Whaddya say, Maurizio? The Fish o' Luv is terrific. I'll probably write a complete review tomorrow. I shared it with a couple of friends yesterday and they were both impressed. One of these friends, quite an accomplished bassist and all-around musician, also threw in some time giving me a lesson -- because to use this instrument to the fullest, I can only benefit by growing my musical knowledge! I hope to call Carey later today to give him my (very, very positive) review before I post my detailed thoughts publicly. You can understand that, can't you? By the way, it's strung with DR Sunbeams. This is my maiden voyage with DRs, and so far I'm really pleased with them. And, yes, I still stand by my conviction that the neck on this bass is the most comfortable I've ever played. Complemented by the banjo-sized frets and a well-radiused fingerboard (10"-14" compound), this "soft V" neck profile (as Carey calls it) is just silly in how comfortable it is to play. Peace. --SW PS: Yes, I'm still living in the land of glee. Although being back at work has certainly taken the glee down a notch... spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. _Sweet Willie_
I'll try to add some text quantity now. I've already extolled the virtues of the neck and fingerboard. Neck dive? What's that? Not this bass! The construction of this bass is top-notch. The neck joint is really tight and the instrument, overall, has a really solid feel. The rosewood knobs are not only sexy, but they are secure and turn very smoothly. They are also spaced comfortably apart and easy to reach. I think I prefer knobs in a line like this as opposed to when they're "clustered" (e.g., my Carvin). The fretwork is lovely. The frets are well-seated and the edges are perfectly aligned with the edges of the fingerboard. I asked Carey for a nice thick fingerboard, and that's what I got. I don't know if that's par for the course for him, or whether it varies with the selected fingerboard wood, but it's certainly what I wanted. I was excited about the fingerboard from the get-go on this bass. When we did the specs and were talking about Indian rosewood vs. Brazilian, I realized that what was less important to me was the origin of the wood and what I wanted was a richly and darkly colored, older piece of wood. Carey had just such a piece of Indian rosewood in the shop, and that was the right choice for this bass. The body is very comfortable. The carving is exemplary, and the contours make sense. The slightly bulbous (for lack of a better term) lower end of the body makes this very comfortable to play seated in classical guitar position (bass resting on my left leg, held fairly upright, with end of the bass on my right leg) as well as the more conventional position (bass resting fully on top of my right leg). Without tweaking any knobs, I would describe the sound of this bass -- it's "default" tone -- as clear, bright, and full. The passive tone control can roll off some serious highs, and turned all the way down yields an earful of warm low end. The OBP-3 preamp is surprisingly powerful (and I'm only running it at 9v, C. Alex) -- definitely a good choice. Turning any of the knobs all the way up is generally overkill, and slight adjustments go a long way tonally. Currently I've been enjoying favoring the bridge pickup slightly, keeping the passive tone full up, and slightly turning down the active treble. I also get wicked slap tones from the pickups balanced, the bass in single coil mode, passive tone full up, and turning down the active mid a touch and turning up the active bass a bit. Righteous sizzle on the pops and thump on the slaps. I'm not sure what else to say for now. You've really got to play it to understand it. And if our paths cross, you will be more than welcome to test it out. The more I play it, the happier I am with it. It's a top-notch instrument, obviously built with care and attention to detail. Working with Jay at Blueberry Hill Bass (JPJ here at the LDL) was a pleasure. As my pusher... errr, dealer, he was thoughtful and never pushy (despite my joking) throughout the process. Working with Carey was great. He was patient with my questions and collaborated with me to help realize both my sonic and aesthetic goals with this bass. Those of you who will be at NAMM would be well advised to visit the Nordstrand booth and try his basses. Unfortunately his finest creation (yup, my bass!) will not be in attendance. However, feel free to tell Carey that "the Fish o' Luv sent you". Peace. --Sweet "spreadin' the luv w/ the fish o' luv" Willie spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. I'd agree that the EQ is very powerful - though I've been known to crank the bass all the way for full-on dub moments or when I'm driving the Big Muff hard - you have to seriously lighten up your attack or the volume boost is immense, but such an approach marries up perfectly with the fat reggae tone. I find the treble boost relatively subtle but maybe that's just my old string fetish - it's certainly a lot better sounding than the 1kHz treble control on the MEC2 which is voiced exactly wrong... I haven't heard of any difference between 9V and 18V power - Aguilar quote another 6dB of output with 18V but that must be headroom as opposed to gain as the preamp is unity gain. My 18V need is due to the EMG pickups sounding better at higher voltage. Nice. Very nice indeed. _Sweet Willie_
Still luvin' the Fish. Had some buzz on the lower frets, particularly the low B and E strings. I loosened the truss rod a touch yesterday evening and noticed some alleviation of the problem later that night. I expect that all will be well tonight, once the adjustment has "settled" in. Just helping the FoL acclimate to Joisey after its infancy in CA. An astute query from mon ami Claberonious Phunk: How does the passive tone knob compare to the cut on the active treble control? The passive tone has the potential to alter the sound of the bass more radically than cutting the active treble. To my ears, the passive tone has a broader effect than cutting the active treble. For example, cutting the active treble all the way takes some sheen and brightness out of the sound of the bass while turning down the passive tone completely sends the bass into dub-like territory. It's tough to describe in words what I hear, but I hope that helps you understand. Peace. --s-uu spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk. dcr
Thanks for the update! Nice to hear that, now that you've REALLY got to know it, you still really dig it. I've not played one, but it looks to me like it would be tough to beat Nordstrand on a custom bass. I'm still gobsmacked over that ebony-top single-cut ... Davo-London
Assuming it's a 35" scale? That makes the PUs, 2.7" and 6.9" from the G-string saddle. I do hope Alex has approved this!
