Dwarf
Originally posted by posterchild: How much of a Paul McCartney fan are you? I mean, can you call yourself a serious fan? Well, my wife and I must be reaaaaallly serious fans, as we just sat through "Give my Regards to Broad Street"... We didn't have any particular expectations before seeing it, other than we were aware it had gotten less than glowing reviews, but... Wow, this movie was a bit of a struggle, even for me (a former MST3K viewer)...
I actually kinda liked it. It's not a great movie, but it's better than a whole bunch of what's out there.
The most charitable things I can find about the movie are... * George Martin is in it. :thu: * There's some cool shots of studio gear. * There's some good songs. * This movie has breakdancing!
* Jeff Porcaro is in it.
Next week: We rent "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. I've seen most of that movie before, but my wife hasn't. But we're Beatles fans. We're tough. We can handle it... I think.
You are a sucker for punishment, aren't you!
So what have you suffered through because you're a fan? Lee Flier
The "Sgt. Pepper" movie.... uuugghhhhh... I may be a fanatic but I don't think I'd ever sit through that again! Ummm... I sat through Journey to see the Stones (they were opening... AAAAGHHHHH!!!!). TWICE. Does that count? I also sat through REO Speedwagon to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Sheer torture! Hell, I even sat through Bob Dylan just to see Bob Dylan. :D --Lee
StoneKnife
Buying Tom Waits' "Alice" and listening to it 3 times to make sure it was as screwed up as I originally thought. "We are the Federales... ernest828
Fans is short for FANATICAL and I am not that serious abut anyone to sit through crap. I love Seals albums but his live show totally BLOWS. I love The Beatles but the honest to Gods truth is... if they came along today, they wouldn`t sell many records. Timing was everything for them. Paul McCarthy is a great musician but after he and Lennon stopped the colloborating, Paul suddenly became an average songwriter. Coincidence? Fans are in a way, helplessly in the mercy of the artist they so love. Its blind love at times. I`d respect Billy Joel more if he would just stop performing all together. I`d respect Elton John more if he would stop producing the same sound over and over. Let alone Bon Jovi. Peace, Ernest
nursers
I flew from Sydney Australia to Toronto, Canada to see the Dave Matthew Band live. I have also made the committment that I would sleep with either Bono or Michael Stipe if they allowed me to play keys on stage at a stadium show for a couple of nights. And I'm not even gay :D The Keyboard Chronicles Podcast Check out your fellow forumites in an Apple Music playlist Check out your fellow forumites in a Spotify playlist My Music: Stainless Fields
Dwarf
Originally posted by posterchild: Since you've seen it, maybe you could explain what that middle 20 minutes were about (when it kicks into a silent movie/Eleanor Rigby mode)... We were totally confused, and my wife was claiming it was a takeoff of "A Christmas Carol"... Until they started stabbing people. :D
Umm, sorry, can't help you with that one. Maybe Paul just wanted to have a picnic? Other than it being a dream sequence I can't say what it's there for. Talk to Sigmund Freud :)
* David Gilmour was in the end credits for playing guitar -- I don't know if he actually appeared in the movie.
According to the IMDB he's not in the movie. Maybe he's just on the soundtrack? He did appear with Paul at the Cavern Club show a couple of years ago if that counts ;-) Aha, Dave plays on the track "No More Lonely Nights". There ya go. -- Rob I have the mind of a criminal genius.....I keep it in the freezer next to mother.

Lee Flier
Well, OK if we're talking travel here... let's see... I went all the way from L.A. to Massachusetts and Philadelphia to see the Stones. Also went from L.A. to London to see Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, even though I'd already seen them a bunch of times on their American tour. OK, I'm sick. Boy were those trips worth it though... got to hang out all night at a Stones rehearsal in Mass., and on the London trip I got to meet George and Ringo. So my complete illness paid off. :D --Lee
Tedster
Not as big, but I did drive from Kansas City to Detroit to see Paul McCarthy :D in concert. BTW...he and Lennon's official collaborations kinda slowed down relatively early in the Beatles' thing. But, to me, you're right, the whole was always greater than the sum of the individual pieces. I suffered through about an hour of "How I Won the War" before saying "This is totally stupid" and changing the channel. I've seen "Broad Street", though years ago. I think I may have it on tape somewhere. I do remember a dream sequence with "Rigby" in there, seems like he played "Here, There, and Everywhere" back to back with Rigby. He did the same at his concert. Odd how McCartney, for a rather bright chap, never seemed to "have it" in the film world. "Magical Mystery Tour" was his brainchild as well. Great music videos (especially Walrus and the psychedelic "Flying"), but that's about it. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
Botch.
While living in Albuquerque I had tickets to see Chick Corea's first Electrik Band in Santa Fe, but also had a business meeting in Boulder CO the next morning. I drove to Santa Fe (about an hour), saw the most humbling display of musicianship in my life, and was so high on the music I was still wide awake when I arrived in Boulder at 4 am. Made it thru the meetings the next day but sure was dragging by Happy Hour ;) Botch "Eccentric language often is symptomatic of peculiar thinking" - George Will www.puddlestone.net
