Phoney McRing Ring
Hey there everyone, just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas for this little problem my band is having. We have(and always had in one form or another)a female singer and shes great (shes a great bass player too which worries me slightly ) but we're playing a gig at our drummers 18th at the new year. Its not going to be a big thing just doing covers all night, but there in lies the problem. We're getring a bit stuck for songs that sound good sung by a girl. i know that sounds weird but some songs just dont go with female vocals. so what we have so far is 1.Play that funky music white boy (i know i see the problem too) 2.Aeroplane by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (because the drummer demanded i slap at least once in the set and this is it) 3.Possibly sweet child of mine 4.A steepin Wolf song i cant remeber the name of (used in the austin powers movies if that helps) 5.You outta Know by Alanis Morrisete(?) and some no doubt stuff possibly Other than that we're stuck. So anyone know of any songs that will get ppl dancing and sounds good sung by one of those woman things please let me know. EddiePlaysBass
IMHO any song that would fit her vocal range and style would do, whether it's originally sung by a woman or not ... That said, maybe some Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Aretha Franklin, Joss Stone, Motörhead, Nancy Sinatra ... "I'm a work in progress." Gruuve
Let's see...how about.... 1) Baby Love by Mother's Finest 2) Pretty much anything by No Doubt 3) Pretty much anything by Alanis Morisette 4) Would I Lie To You by The Eurythmics I'm trying to think of songs we did when we had our female vocalist. We didn't do many covers with her, mostly originals...I'll add more as I think of them... HTH, Dave Old bass players never die, they just buy lighter rigs. - Tom Capasso, 11/9/2006
jeremy c
Try the Motown catalog. Martha and the Vandellas Gladys Knight and the Pips And of course Aretha Franklin. I'll Take You There by the Staples Singers. Or I suppose you could play Get This Party Started by Pink. Or one of Sheryl Crow's songs. But my question is, you have a female singer and she doesn't know what she wants to sing? She doesn't know songs already? What kind of singer is that? Free download of my cd!. dcr
Now this really IS a toughie. I mean, a female lead vocalist? Can you really do that? Have you checked local statutes? Gosh, this is just not the sort of thing that comes up every day!
g.
It is true that no female singers have ever graced the pop charts in the history of recorded music. You have two choices: (1) Become blazing trailbreakers overnight, starting a new phenom! (2) Kill yourself because you have been unable to find the umptygazillion examples via print, television, radio, or the internet .

Nicklab
I wouldn't limit your choices to picking songs from artists with female singers. I'd focus more on songs that are in your singer's range, and wouldn't sound awkward from a lyrical standpoint when delivered by a woman. There are plenty of songs like that out there. Keep your options open. Obligatory Social Media Link "My concern is, and I have to, uh, check with my accountant, that this might bump me into a higher, uh, tax..." PickPunk
There is an all female misfits cover band called the Miss Fits, if female vocals don't sound awkward singing songs originally sung by glenn danzig, the sky (and your singer's range) is the only limit i see. peace
bruiser_dup2
Janis Joplin? Down on Me? Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)? Ball and Chain? I think those could be done for a dancing audience. And Summertime would make a nice slow dance. If your audience is young enough, they may not realize you're covering dinosaur rock. . . rotosound45
Speaking of range, I've heard a few females who could wail on Alice In Chains and Soundgarden stuff.....
RHINO_ROB
speaking of all girl tribute bands there is one around here to ac/dc called ac/dshe. now if they can do that then i think anything is possible.

g.
Yep. And as for "key", most songs (I've heard rumored) can be transposed to another key without depleting the ozone layer. .
Rick Hoffman
We got a chic singer. She's good, so we don't have to worry about what songs to do...just pick songs you like and play with the lyrics a little if its a big deal to you. Or have her dress as a man. jeremy c
You know that this is a ridiculous thread. Yes, you are in high school and none of you have heard a lot of music. From the initial post, it seems as if you have heard very little music. Dance music has always had many, many songs song by female vocalists. I just did a little search for "greatest dance songs" 10 top dance songs Six of the ten songs have lead female vocalists. Start listening to music! Free download of my cd!. Phoney McRing Ring
Jeremy man that cut deep. I've sung your praises many times on this forum purley because of how you conduct yourself on here but that shit was harsh. Yes we have many songs we could do and our singer knows a lot of really good stuff. I would also like to point out that my music collection runs from Mudvayne, through Blink 182,No Doubt, Earth,Wind and Fire,Return to Forever,Counting Crows,Alanis,Biffy Clyro finishing of somewhere around Christian McBride,Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis so please dont try and tell me that because im young i dont listen to a wide variety of music. The reason i asked this question was because i was hoping that people might tell of some songs that a crowd liked that we had not thought of yet. The fact is, we play some songs when we jam that we enjoy playing but that our singer's range is not suited for so we needed some backups Anyway cheers to the guys that put down some suggestions, i will look into them. Steve Force
Phoney McRing Ring, Since that was his second post I am almost positive it wasn't directed at you. I think he is getting irritated with all of the sexual crap in these threads and vented. Just my take on this, might not be on point.. Regards. g.
I realize it is a novel thought, but you don't have to do all the same songs anyway. It's another area one can differentiate their band with, and another place to express and explore creativity. .
jeremy c
Sorry, McRing, from the songs you through out in the first post, it didn't sound like you had any ideas at all. I stand corrected. You still could use a few more vocalists in your record collection. In both posts I did give suggestions, so it's not all insults with me. Here's a better list. Dancin' In the Street (Marha and the Vandellas) Heard It Through The Grapevine (Gladys Knight and the Pips) Stop in the Name of Love (The Supremes) We Are Family (Sister Sledge) Hot Stuff (Donna Summer) I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor) Like A Virgin (Madonna) Chain of Fools (Aretha Franklin) Rescue Me (Fontella Bass) Pink Cadillac (Natalie Cole) Freeway of Love (Aretha Franlkin) Once You Get Started (Rufus and Chaka Khan) I'll Take You There (The Staples Singers) The Cleanup Woman (Betty Wright) Think (Lynn Collins) Something To Talk About (Bonnie Raitt) Upside Down (Diana Ross) Le Freak (Chic) I'm Every Woman (Chaka Khan) Hard For the Money (Donna Summer) There's two sets worth. If the audience won't dance to that, they won't dance to anything. Free download of my cd!.
