coyote
I've had the Warwick Corvette fretless for less than a week now.... My whole conception of the fingerboard has changed! It's like a bunch of limits have been removed. Besides the obvious ability to smoothly slide up & down the strings, it just seems everything has opened up and I can see the scale patterns more easily; also it now seems to be much more about the relationships between the notes I'm actually playing since intonation of each & every note is now entirely up to me. In addition, playing this amazing bass sent me back to my cheapo Robelli bass to set it up properly. I gave the neck some relief by loosening the truss rod slightly, and was therefore able to drop the bridge saddles a bit and get a much better action. It still ain't quite the action of the Warwick but it's much better than it was (and it wasn't at all bad before that). And the new 'view' inspired by the Warwick fretless translated to the Robelli immediately - my playing has been changed. There's just one problem: I'm supposed to be practicing keyboards & guitar for my band but I can't get the Warwick out of my hands I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. SteveC
I've been playing my fretless a lot more lately. Mostly because my fretted bass was out getting new electronics installed for about 3 weeks. I like to use it for my church gig. Since I don't need to slap or play much funk at the moment, the fretless works great.
coyote
I presume the reason for not slapping on fretless is to preserve the fingerboard... I did some slap on the Warwick and it sounds great. I used to think I was Libertarian. Ed Friedland
Sure you can slap on a fretless, it just sounds different. No metallic clank, but the effect is there. It won't cut through as aggressively, but it may still be useful. It's interesting to hear how the fretless opened up your view of the fret(less)board. I'm curious, is it an unlined fingerboard? coyote
Yeah, it's unlined. I don't rely on seeing frets too much anyway; on both gtr and bass I don't need to look at the neck much. That's helping me a bit as I can focus on listening to what I'm playing and really nail down the intonation. The intervals and harmonies are just leaping out at me, both sonically and visually. I think having a fretless with fretlines would not have provoked nearly as much transformation in my approach to the instrument. I used to think I was Libertarian. Raven
Welcome to the world of fretless... The more you play it the more you're gonna love it... Congratz.... BCR's homepage
coyote
Ordinarily I'd say thanks - but since you're obviously participating in identity theft by impersonating Raven I'm very suspicious of your activities I used to think I was Libertarian. Whacked
grats again on your new fretless. I have to agree with the smoothness of going up and down the fretboard. it just feels soooo nice.
rotosound45
I played a black fretless Fender Jazz Standard for a while that had no lines, just a clean rosewood fingerboard. I'd love to have it back just for the vibe .
Fred TBP
Your next purchase should be one of Tony Levin's solo CDs. On any one of a dozen stellar fretless electric players. To think you can do what they do with a little time and practice is a goal worth striving for. The least expensive yet most valuable component you bring to your learning experience will always be time - the time you invest to master this. Welcome to the start of a new journey.
