ryanw
Well, I bought a pair of Studio Projcets C1's. The only other real mic I own is the Neumann TLM103 so I didn't dare to compare it to the U87. I don't want to post my opinion, I want to hear what you guys think. This was a rough recording, had about 15 minutes before I had to run to dinner, put the mics about 2' apart with the neumann TLM103 in the middle of both of them, all pointing at the hole of the guitar. Listen to the wav files I have if you have broadband (or want to let it go overnight or something) it's a 30 MB file. http://my.puter.net/~warf/test.zip These files have not been normalized, eq'ed, compressed, nutin' ... I had the preamps on all three mics all in the same place. I had all 3 mics pluged into the preamps of my SoundTracs mixer going through the buss to my Alesis AI3 which plugged into my RME lightpipe card into my Powermac G4 800Mhz into Nuendo. The guitar was an ovation with some old strings (too bad, sorry) ... I do some talking, I'm not a singer (nor a guitar player for that matter) ... But it's all the same take so you can hear a real comparison to the TLM103 and the C1's What do you guys think? Ryan
ryanw
One of my favorite parts of comparison on those wav files at that url is at seconds 3:27 through 3:30. You hear me opening and closing my studio door. You definatly hear a difference between the TLM103 and the C1 at that point.

bernhard_bb
I really downloaded that Zip (it was a 56mb file in my case). Yes, that guitar wasn´t in tune. Yes, you can definitely hear the difference between those two mics, but I was not sure which one to like more. C1 seemed to be slightly hotter and brighter with a bit more bass. But I was monitoring the whole thing on my Internet PC, with $50 monitors, so my statement might not be objective enough. As with all mics, it will depend on the application and the instrument and many factors more, which one to prefer. I think for a "nylon" guitar I would choose the TLM103 over the C1. And for a "western" the other way around. But it really depends on where you want to fit-in that guitar (pop mix, classical recording, duet with a flute,.....) The TLM seemed to have more control over the resonances of that guitar, but the C1- sound was a bit more spectacular (at least when you don´t adjust the levels).
