noucho
... was Donny Hathaway's bassist. I really liked his playing, and tried to find out some more about him on the internet, without success. Has anyone heard of him, with whom he played, etc ? noucho
Thanks. Well, his discography really aint very appealing !... BenLoy
Thanks. Well, his discography really aint very appealing !... However, I found him (and the other musicians) really groovy on Donny Hathaway's 1972 Live album. Whatever...Not very appealing??? Check the following albums out before you say that: Taken from: http://www.warr.org/sessrhythm.html#Weeks Willie Weeks is an extraordinarily nimble bass player who made a big splash in rock circles from 1973 to 1975 as he went from one big-name session to another. He's worked often with George Harrison, and the "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll" session in early 1974, with David Bowie and Ron Wood in attendance, seems to have been a catalyst for his career. His latest appearance on our site dates to 1981, but he's still around, having since guested on a Jimmy Buffett record (!) and joined the band on Janis Ian's latest album. On many early records he appears with drummer Andy Newmark, so we've listed them together. (JA) * David Bowie, Young Americans (with Newmark) * Isaac Hayes, New Horizon * Janis Ian, "Memphis" * Carole King, Wrap Around Joy (Newmark only); Really Rosie (Newmark only) * George Harrison, Living In The Material World, Dark Horse, George Harrison, Somewhere In England * Rickie Lee Jones * Alicia Keys, "Wake Up" * Laura Nyro, Nested * Pointer Sisters, Havin' A Party * The Rolling Stones, "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll" * Leo Sayer, Endless Flight * Carly Simon, Anticipation (Newmark only) * Rod Stewart, "Let Me Be Your Car" (with Newmark); A Night On The Town * James Taylor, In The Pocket * Tom Verlaine, "The Scientist Writes A Letter" (Newmark only) * Steve Winwood, Steve Winwood (with Newmark) * Stevie Wonder, "He's Misstra Know-it-all" * Ron Wood, I've Got My Own Album To Do (with Newmark); Now Look (with Newmark)

noucho
OK. I just said "not appealing" to express the fact that a lot of the records in this list I wouldn't buy. However it IS "impressive". And confirms me in the idea that the guy is good. Listen to Donny Hathaway Live-1972 !..
jeremy c
Yes, I listened to Donny Hathaway Live back when it came out in 71 and I memorized the bass solo. Time marches on. Willie Weeks lives in Nashville and is one of the top players there now. Welcome to the Lowdown, Noucho! Free download of my cd!.

Steve Lawson
How does Willie live with himself? If only played on a third of the greatest albums ever like he has, I'd be pretty ashamed too... That's got to be one of the finest discogs on the planet - Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, JT, Carly Simon, Michael McDonald, Donnie Hathaway, George Harrison...???? unbelieveable. If I was wearing a hat, I'd tip it in Mr Weeks' direction. FWIW, every black american bassist I ever interviewed for Bassist magazine (and a fair few of the white ones) sited the solo on 'Everything Is Everything' as a pivotal moment in their relationship with the instrument... I still can't work out what he's doing in the middle of it! Steve www.stevelawson.net StevieLand - go on, you know you want to!
noucho
All RIGHT, I see that we're all talking about the same solo !... Actually, I am no bass player (drummer), but from a neophyte's point of view, it doesn't seem that technical, but it just makes you want to shake your head and tap your feet and pretend you're playing the bass, 'cause it has so so much groove. Its irrepressible...
noucho
...well OK, it also sounds technical...
