Bass nut

Okay, I'm still trying to get my project bass together, but a question has popped up...

Where can I find a pre-slotted nut? I'm looking for one that fits a 1-9/16" slot, but everything I find is for 1-5/8", and searches on Google just bring up spec sheets.

Help?!

That's only 1/32" extra on each side, is filing an option?

If so, I wouldn't think that string spacing would be off a noticable amount going w/ the larger nut, unless you consider ~1/64" a noticable amount.

If not, try contacting the companies whose spec sheets you are coming across.

Ah, nice marmot.

Buy a set of needle files- it will almost definitely be necessary to modify the individual nut slot's depths, anyway, so don't let pre-slotted narrow your choices. A hacksaw blade and inexpensive file set should do the job.

If you do decide to file it, take your time, especially with plastic. Because if you go too deep, its very hard to make it higher.

i'm assuming you want a pre-slotted nut due to how expensive a set of nut files are. here's my low-budget solution:

strings are abrasive (as evidenced by having to have your frets redressed every now and again). start the lot with a needle file (which you can get pretty inexpesively at a hobby shop as you don't need a great one) and then use some old strings to file out the rest of the slot. it's gonna take some wirk as strings are not as abrasive as a proper nut file, but it'll get the job done.

Eeeeeehhhhhhhhh.
