hags2k
Well, after having some great experiences with my Carvin amp, and growing more and more tired of the knob tweaking that I have to do to my big head, I've decided to make a change. I currently have a Fender Bassman 1200 PRO head, which has a tube preamp and a 1200 watt power section. It's nice, but the way my Carvin combo has handled itself has really impressed me. It's on ebay right now. I'm not posting a link, as I don't want to be a spammer. If people think it's okay to post a link, I will later on. Anyway, knowing that Carvin uses the same power amp technology in their PA power amps as in their bass amps, I've decided to pick up a Carvin DCM 1500 power amp, and probably a BBE BMAX bass preamp to go with it. I've heard the BMAX briefly before, and it sounded great. Bass Player also reviewed it and had lots of great things to say about it. It has a nice optical compressor built in (something I've wanted for a while) and a BBE Sonic Maximizer exciter built in, another toy I've been drooling over. Both of those are footswitchable, so it seems like a great fit! Plus, I've been drooling over the idea of going to a preamp power-amp rack setup for a long time. This seems like a good way to start with that. With any luck, I will get my amp sold on ebay. Here's hoping! I'm also generally pretty patient about these things. We shall see! unkownroadband.com - step into the unkown :-)
Mr. Phil
Sounds like fun! I've heard nothing but good about BBEs. And I don't see why can't post a link. You never know if someone here will buy it. getz out
Preamps: In that price range, you could also check out the SansAmp RBI; I like it. I remember BenLoy saying he didn't like it as a standalone preamp. Work a listen, though. Also check the used market for preamps. Alembic, Demeter, Peavey, etc. often pop up on ebay. It may not sound like much difference, but it certainly feels like it once it's all racked up. If you're a willing ebayer there's some good deals to be found! The B-Max looks like a fine design, I've heard many good things about it and it's a total bargain! hags2k
Thanks for the suggestions as far as power amps go. I will look at ebay for other options, most certainly. One big reason I wanted to go with the DCM, besides good experiences with Carvin gear, is that I could get it brand new and under warranty for a great price. However, I ddo understand that 15 pounds can make a huge difference. The Carvin is already lighter than my current amp, but it's still a beast. I'll keep looking and keep posting here. Thanks again! unkownroadband.com - step into the unkown :-)
_Sweet Willie_
If you don't mind the weight, then don't worry about it. I have friend here who uses an Eden Navigator preamp, a Carvin DCM-1500, and two Eden 4x10 cabs. Sometimes he brings one cab, sometimes two, depending on the gig. It's a lot of weight, but it's gear that does what he wants and doesn't fail him. C. Alex and getz76 both know that I'm definitely a fan of smaller and lighter rigs, but if you dig the Carvin power amp, the pros for you may outweigh (pun intended) the con of the weight. Do whatcha gotta do. Peace. --Sweets spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk.
rumpelstiltskin.
sweet rig! i'm glad the carvin is working out for you. if i weren't so in love with my bergantino, i think i'd miss the carvin. (heck, i do miss the carvin, even with my bergantino!) because i like to be part of the chorus of assholes (you know, guys who like to suggest their favorite gear no matter what you're into... ), i was suggest the cheaper carvin power amps, but i guess they don't make them any longer. any interest in the B1500 head? robb. because i like people.
