onelove
Today as I was playing my guitar I suddenly felt a dull, concentrated pain on the tip of the index finger on my fretting hand, which materialized every time I put the slightest pressure on it. I've never felt this before, or not for more than a few seconds... it has been about 20 minutes now and is still there. Has anyone experienced what I'm talking about, and do you think it will go away soon? I think I can survive without playing my guitar or bass for the rest of the day, but I'm playing bass at church tomorrow so I hope my finger is better by then. Thanks, Dave

PickPunk
How long have you been playing? sounds like a blister to me. I used to get those when i first started but if you play enough your fingers build up strength and toughness so they dont get blisters as easily. Mr. Phil
Yea that strength and toughness is commonly called a Callous. Look at the bottom of your feet. Then feel them. Compare your feet to the rest of the skin on your body. Those are callouses. They are your friend. http://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/blue.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/black.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/fuscia.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/grey.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/orange.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/purple.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/red.JPGhttp://www.briantimpe.com/images/LDL/dots/yellow.JPG
onelove
lmao I should've mentioned that I've been playing for about four years and already have thick callouses. It's not a blister either. The pain is deeper in my finger, like where the bone ends.

Raven
It sounds like you may have popped a blood vessel in your finger. Does it feel kinda tight at the end? I've had it happen to me before on my picking fingers, and its better within a few hours. You should be fine by tomorrow. If its not any better in 24 hours, you might think about seeing a doctor. All the best....... BCR's homepage
Scoot
I've had the same feeling before and it never turned into a blister or anything serious. Just take it easy on the poor guy for a while until it clears up. Ah, nice marmot.

Mr M Pulsive
I get the same thing occaisionally. I have no idea why, really, but it's not a big deal. Kinda feels like you're pressing down on a thumb tack when you fret with some real pressure, huh? It'll go away in a day or less. -Mike ...simply stating. onelove
Yeah, I guess I got worried a little too early, it cleared off after a few hours Still, I hope it doesn't happen too often... you don't realize how awkward things can be without your fingers until you can't use 'em. The Fonz
i get that every now and then. the only thing i can really relate it to are the bone bruises i used to get back when i was an athlete. make that WAAAAAAAY back when... something to think about: i know we as bass players pride ourselves in the size and toughness of our calluses, but this floats through my head every now and then while pondering them. if left unattended calluses on our feet turn into corns. could this pain that a lot of us often experience be the same thing? are we getting corns on our fingers? Eeeeeehhhhhhhhh.

Connie Z
Hi onelove, Glad to hear that the pain went away. I would vote that if it happens again, look into it a little further. Maybe research it on the internet or speak with a hand doctor. Not any old doctor, but a hand doctor. Other doctors will probably dismiss it, but you can't dismiss it, because this is very important to your LIFE!!! I used to get a pain in my fretting hand, at the bass of my ring finger, which felt like a broken blood vessel, and hurt quite a bit. It would take several days to a week to go away. It happened about three different times. I think a little bruising showed on the surface and a dull intense pain in that spot when anything touched it. And I never did anything to cause it. It wasn't from playing, as far as I could tell. It would just happen spontaneousely. I later found out that I was anemic, and have been taking iron and supplements, and I have not had that problem since (as well as about 100 other problems). I don't know if it's related or not, but I am glad it's gone!
