Fretted to fretless conversion

Mystic Rhythms

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking for a long time to get my jazz de-fretted, but I am wondering what the drawbacks will be. But I'm thinking alot of the positive. Today I played my first electric fretless and I loved it, and I'm sure I'll get a great tone out of my jazz. I was wondering how much this would cost, and the pros/cons of it. I think I am going to get the Rickenbacker jetglo first so I can have a fretted and a fretless. Any suggestions?

Do it!

Search the forum for detailed instructions (look for defretting) but all you need is a pair of pliers, a soldering iron (to melt the fretglue), some veneer/plastic sheet/filler for the gaps ans some sandpaper and a sanding block to smooth the board (and optionally some kind of varnish (polyurethane industrial floor varnish worked for me!) if you want a brighter sound/to protect the board).

Check out my DIY fretless in action here!

Whoa, wait a minute here. Not that I wanted advice how to do it myself, but I wanted to know the pros and cons of taking it in and getting it done. I did look through the search, nothing I wanted. I want to know if you guys have any experiences getting your bass de-fretted and if it was worth it after all.
