What is that strange thing Craig Anderton has?

Recommended Posts

I have read many articles on keyboards, computers and software by Craig Anderton. In all that reading I think he has been holding out. I visit his web site at Craig Anderton dot com and there it is. Not like any keyboard I have ever seen. Not a computer attachment that I am familiar with. What is that strange device he has in his hand? Some type of new MIDI device? Interresting. Robert

That is a new type of physically-modeled synthesizer. It consists of six monophonic oscillators on a plank of wood, with interesting timbral shifts at different pitches. There are three program changes ("bass," "treble," and "both") as well as a pitch bend lever, master volume control, and 6 dB/octave low pass filter. It has a unique "matrix controller" which doesn't use keys, but instead arranges pitches as a matrix. Pressing on the oscillator at the correct point in the matrix, the creating a trigger with the right hand, produces a note. There are only 6 voices of polyphony, but it's amazine what you can do with them.

During my many, many years of education, I once had an instructor who said something very important to me. What he said was this: "Play a guitar like it's a guitar. Take advantage of the things that guitars can do...those things that keyboardists have to jump through hoops of fire to accomplish." Well, I'm a multi-instrumentalist, and pretty decent at quite a few instruments, including keys. But I still try and play my "6 monophonic oscillators on a plank of wood" with all the grungy imperfection I can. And I still love it. :) - Jeff
