National releases with humble orgins

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if you guys know of artists who've had national releases that was recorded on modest gear. I can think of a couple right off, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, done on cassette eight track I think, and I'm not sure which album, but Los Lobos on the same medium. Correct my sketchy examples, but to me thats pretty dang exciting doing things so "DIY". Whats your cut?
Down like a dollar comin up against a yen, doin pretty good for the shape I'm in

With Los Lobos, you're probably referring to the Latin Playboys, who had their first album recorded on cassette four-track!!! I'll bet that there's a lot of releases out there recorded on fairly modest computer equipment. If someone is making electronic music, a computer is a great medium, and one can make great sounds without making very many concessions on really modest computer gear.

Creed's first was done on Adat and mackie gear... mostly tracked at a place dubbed "The Kitchen"... because it was in their engineer's kitchen. You've got to admit they got a pretty large sound out of it...
Primus' first one was done on a TASCAM 388.
That was their live album, 'Suck On This'. Was that their first album? Killer version of 'Tommy the Cat' on that record. BTW, the Tascam 388 rocks. I saw one for sale the other day, but didn't have enough scratch to shell out, dammit. First multitrack I ever learned myself on! Drew
