Matt.Hepworth
Yes, I know of the Soundelux, but it's more than a lot of U67's. Problem with a U67 is you never know what you're buying. I want to pay between $1 and $2000. Any suggestions? No matter how good something is, there will always be someone blasting away on a forum somewhere about how much they hate it. Philip OKeefe
Soundelux U99... but you already knew that. :) But "It's more than a lot of U67's"?!? I don't think so... going rate for a '67 seems to be in the $3,000 - $4,500 range... At $3K, I'd wonder what I'd be getting... at $4,500 it had better be dang near mint... You should be able to Soundelux, which to a lot of people sounds BETTER than most '67's out there, for no more than $2,250, which isn't much over what you've got budgeted. Outside of a GOOD original U67 or the Soundelux U99, I have no idea of any other mic with a '67 vibe.
Meriphew_dup1
Like Phil said, the U99 would probably be your best bet. That's what I would get if i were you. www.meriphew.com
Matt.Hepworth
Thanks guys. I actually thought the Soundelux mic was about $3k, and I often see U67's going in for $2.5k to 3.5k. Thanks for the warning (I was already quite leary). Phil, I hope you didn't take any offense to my earlier post. Peace. Matt.Hepworth
I now understand that the U99 is bright and airy. My favorite thing about the U67 is how dark they typically are. Any dark U67 cousins? No matter how good something is, there will always be someone blasting away on a forum somewhere about how much they hate it. Matt.Hepworth
Just heard about the ADK 51s. Supposed to be dark and 67ish. Aren't these mics cheap? I have no doubt that it is nowhere near as good as a good U67, but it would be one I wouldn't be afraid to kick around in addition to the U67 or as a temporary substitute. Anyone? audiofreek
I've got a a-51 tube cardioid. It has a nice tube, toasty sound in the mid range,as opposed to the Rode NTK,which has a dip in the mid-range,this makes the NTK sound smoother, warmer, and hyped in the Hi-end.I don't have a U67,but I do have a vintage U87.If I need a tube sound, but I don't want all the low-end and fizzy hi-end,I go for the ADK,but I would never call on it when I need a dark sound.By comparison, the NTK sounds more like a Neumann, but with a mid-range dip, certainly lots of warmth. For your money, the quality and craftmanship of the Rode microphones is heads and tails above the ADK,at about the same price.
