Dwarf
Howdy Folks, I have a set of ear plugs, I don't know who made 'em but they're very similar to ER-25s. The molds are a kind of honey yellow colour. I've noticed that a green mold wants to grow in the inside, up against where the filter plugs in. I swab them down with q-tips to try and clean them and I run them under water (without the filters in), but the best I can do is remove some of the mold, never all of it. Dipping the q-tip in rubbing alcohol seems to work a little better but I worry about the alcohol affecting the rubber/silicone compound of the mould. I've looked around at various websites (etymotic research. westone labs) but while very informative the info never carries through to maintenance. If ever there was a newsgroup to ask this question on, this should be it. Anyone have customs plugs? How do you clean them? Wewus432
Try Vinegar-Vinegar is a known fungicide. I would just dip the whole thing in vinegar and then wash.
offramp
There's also a product I've had fantastic luck with on several applications, called Spray Nine. I found it at the hardware store (and why the grocery/drug stores don't carry it is beyond me); it's a disinfectant/fungicide/you name it that not only kicks butt on cleaning but smells clean, to boot...none of this perfumed or antiseptic crap. I've upped my standards; now, up yours.
natty fred
be careful with the filters, any sort of moisture can wreck the effectiveness of them..... i will ask the specialist who has made mine for their tips on this and get back to you peace, natty
Dwarf
Hey Natty, thanks. I'm currently trying the Wee Wusses idea of vinegar. It seems to be working, albeit slowly. Offramp - stores closed at present so I'll wait to try your idea until I see how vinegar works. -- Rob I have the mind of a criminal genius.....I keep it in the freezer next to mother. natty fred
hey Rob! I didn't forget about you, You know I found my instruction sheet on keeping them good, so I put it in an obvious & safe place so I would remember to post, anyway now I can't find it :freak: but you are on the right track, apparently you can get a special fluid from Elacin for cleaning them but as long as you take the filters out, vinegar is probably fine. (mine don't seem to get that dirty!) The notes did say something about the moulds shrinking over time, and that the moulds should be replaced every 3-4yrs as the fit won't be as snug, and then you lose the effectiveness. peace, natty
Dwarf
Hey Natty, The vinegar didn't seem to do any harm although the plugs went from a translucent honey colour to more of a light brown, but what the hell :) Replace the moulds every 3-4 years? Mine are going on ten. Oops. I haven't noticed much of a change in fit, they were always kinda second rate (they're too short, they stop at the first bend). -- Rob I have the mind of a criminal genius.....I keep it in the freezer next to mother.
