dhmusicmindspring.com
I suspect this topic has been already sliced and diced by you guys, so maybe you can refer me to the relevant thread(s)...or comment. My trusty SCSI burner went down and I can either replace it with a FireWire unit, or (as someone suggested to me) go the extra distance in time and money to find a SCSI replacement burner because he says for audio they are superior. True? How? Why? Can they sound or play diffferent./more reliably/etc...than fire? Anybody?
Wewus432
SCSI has a much faster transfer rate. Here's something that I copied from a previous post. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USB is about 15 mb (megaBITS/sec) or 1.2MB (megaBYTES) vs. Firewire which is 400mb or 50 MB. Firewire is a significantly faster/broader bandwidth than USB. The latest SCSI implimentations are 160 MB (megaBYTES)/sec making it just over 3 times as fast/wide as Firewire, though it is more expensive & still subject to "SCSI voodoo" (DON"T get me started...). Remember these numbers are the theoretical maximums of the respective BUSSES, not real world performance of any particular device. Actual throughput speed will vary according to a variety of factors, but expect 25 - 35% less than the theoretical numbers. I can't imagine where RN got the idea that USB is faster than firewire; unless you're talking about USB 2.0 - which is slightly faster than Firewire, though not widely implimented or supported in the computer audio recording world as yet. Danny M
To officially split the hair, USB 1.0 is 12 Mbps...if I recall correctly. :D As I always say in these situations, I'm not out to rag on anybody. To extend this even further, I believe that USB 2.0 has upped the ante to 480 Mbps, and although that's faster than Firewire A, Firewire B (IEEE-1394 B) is supposed to have a high end implementation of 3.2 Gbps. -Danny Grace, Peace, V, and Hz, Danny
Wewus432
I think there is confusion about transfer rates because manufacturers list them in Mbps(Megabits per second, small b) which is different than MBps (MegaBytes per second, capital B). I think they do that intentionally to make the rates look higher than they are. The advertised transfer rates I have, all stated in MBps(MegaBytes per second) are as follows. USB 1.0- 1.2 Megabytes per second Firewire- 40 Megabytes per second USB 2.0- 48 Megabytes per second SCSI- according to which implementation up to 160 Megabytes per second I haven't seen any advertised rates for the new version of Firewire but that measurement you gave must be Gigabits per second because I seriously doubt if any device at present can tranfer over three Gigabytes per second. This is just info I found scrounging around on the internet so feel free to correct me. To answer the original question, A SCSI drive would transfer faster than a Firewire drive which would be desirable. I've seen some external USB 2.0 drives recently and those would be an option too.
