New Rig for PJR

Aguilar DB750 , Epifani 4-10ul

The Aggy was just delivered to me yesterday, it's a real nice piece, solid. I havent looked under the hood yet, but I'm sure its put together nicely.

It's simple straight foward frontpanel is very refreshing ( as opposed to my Mo ) .

The Stats are pretty impressive : 750w into 4 ohm load ...975w into 2 ohm load. The preamp section uses a few ( 3 ??) 12ax7's ...coupled with a powerhouse SS amp.

Epifani has always intrigued me.

I was looking for a smaller cab than my Goliath Sr (6-10's)...but something that could handle a bit more power than my Eden 2-12xlt.

The Epi 4-10ul ( ul stands for Ultralite ) seemed to fit the bill.

This has got to be the lightest 4-10 I've ever seen. It's 59.5 lbs !!

The Eden 2-12xlt is a chunky 74lbs in comparison.

According to Epifani....they shed the lbs by using a 'new' magnet type , which is about 10x lighter than conventional magnet assemblys. That along with some creative woodworking/bracing makes for a 4-10 that seems feather lite but packs a solid punch.

The Epi 4-10ul is rated to handle 1000w rms , 1800w peaks.

So how's this sound??

I don't know yet ....lol

I had rehearsal last nite......and had the Epi sittin' on top of the Eden...so I figured..."What the Heck ??" ...and hooked up the Aggy to both cabs.

When my band mates walked in......the guitarist just stared. I smiled. :)

This combo yielded a very powerful , deep sound. The Eden ( which is only rated for 400w ) handled things nicely......I didnt go crazy with the volume. I was able to rattle just about most everything in and out of the house.

But who cares about that??...what about da tone ???

Initial impressions were of it's immediancy.

The Tone was pure and level....tough to write....

Harmonics seemed very natural....and seemed to sing.

I was able to hear more of the inherent differences in all the basses I own....even in the full band/volume setting.

The rig cut thru the band mix with surgeon-like precision.

And the bottom. Wow can this amp produce some clean low end. Low end with authority.

I would probably never need to use more than the Aggy and Epi.....but it got me thinkin'....

or better yet ...

I'm laughing out loud right now.

Just be sure you don't strain a wrist stacking all that stuff and be out of commission for 2 months.

So, tell me...($4500-$1300 EB M/M=$3200) did you get the Aguilar and the Epi cab for less than $3200? 'Cause that seems a damn sight better to me that an enormous Ampeg Stack. A quick check of internet prices has that stuff coming in at $2800...and better sound than the Ampeg.

I really don't like to discuss $$ things in a public forum.

The MSRP's for both the Aguilar and Epifani are posted on their sites.....and you figure around 70% of that is ballpark for most.

I've built up good relations with a few dealers , which does benefit me. I wouldn't want to jeapordize that.

Does that make sense ??

PJR, that seems like a pretty nice set-up. The Epi cabs I've played have always been dreams (1x12, 2x12, and 2x10). I would expect the 4x10 is shhhweeeet as well, and you've gotta love that they used neodymium speakers and made it as light as some 2x10 cabs!!!

Why not use the full stack?! It gives you a total of ten 10s and two 12s. Sounds like fun to me. I'm impressed you were able to get the 4x10 up on the top for that picture -- it really must be ultralight! ;)

Enjoy the new rig! :D:thu:

Sweets......you should be more impressed that I was able to heave the Aguilar on top of everything!!! ( the Aggy more than makes up for the Lite Epi !! )

PJR, ever thought about competing in the Highland Games? You could do the "two-handed Aguilar toss" for height over a beam. :D

Then again, there's always the "Ampeg 8x10 carry" in the World's Strongest Roadie competition -- you put the fridge on your back, weave thru 50 rows of audience seating, go up 10 steps onto a riser, then across a 50 ft. stage, and finishing when you deposit the cab precisely on a masking-taped footprint.

PJR,

Wasn't really talking about what this cost you...My guy in the other thread has to get to the point where he can get the good deals.

PJR, You should have taken that last picture outside with the sun rising behind the rig and "Also Spake Zarathustra"(sp?) blareing out of it! :D

et tu, Brute?

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I wish I had your wallet and your connections. Everytime I look at my set up and think "This is nice," up steps PJR to kick me in the groin and give me extreme GAS pains.

Seriously, nice rig, man. I have been looking at that Aggy for a while, but never have had the funding to procure it.

I guess we all have to play "Keeping up with the PJR's."

Peter, you should really think of a solo tour where you can really use that 4x10, 6x10, and 2x12.

Maybe you can borrow Whappo's or Wally's 21" Whappo Grande and put it on top of everything.

lol :D

great thread you guys.

That whole stack would be fun to try out. The biggest sound I ever had was using my Eden Metro with the Accugroove El Whappo. For total inch-wise measurements PJR's stack would have a lot more total inches pushing air.
