The Ferry crash at Staten Island

The only time I went to Staten Island was to have Rich Barbera fix the peizo pickup he built for my electric upright. I took the ferry.

This is indeed shocking and sad. Whomever was piloting that thing should not be allowed to pilot it again. The wind was whipping like mad that day, but it always does in the fall and winter months.

I won't be afraid to ride the ferry, though. Everyone should remember that these boats make hundreds of trips back and forth every week. I can't remember the last time I heard of an incident like this happening.

Horrible, though. Is everyone okay? abaguer, are you out there?

I, too, hope everyone's okay. Did they get the scoop on the pilot yet? Apparently he fled the scene, went home, and attempted suicide...presumably, and understandably, torn up about the whole thing.

One story I read suggested that he had either fallen asleep or passed out at the wheel, as a result of either taking some medication or having forgotten to take some medication. The police also took a sample of his blood before he high-tailed it home -- standard procedure to check for illegal drugs or alcohol.

Anyone else besides abaguer from Staten Island?

Like BenLoy said, the ferry is still safe to ride. This was really a freak occurrence. A shame, though -- a real shame.

Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars.

Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk.

Luckily, the only time I take the ferry is if I have a gig during the day in Manhattan (something that is very rare these days).

What people on the ferry said is that is was approaching the dock at a much higher speed than usual for docking. I heard they've subpoenad the Assistant pilot for tests. Really quite a tragedy with lots of innocents hurt.
