New Head Decision

Recommended Posts

I need to buy a new rig and have narrowed my choices down to two heads:

1. Peavey Firebass II

2. Ampeg SVT 3 Pro

My question is do I buy the more powerful head for less money or do I buy the better sounding head for more money. My wallet says to go with the firebass and have more headroom and money, but my heart says to go with the better sounding head because 450 Watts is probably more that I will ever need.

Has anyone ever went with the cheaper head only to regret the decision down the road?

Im getting new head when i can find one that i like, and i can assure you its all about sound, go with the one that sounds better cos in the end you're paying for the sound.

-Same topic different note- reccomendations for a 200+ watt head within kinda £500/1000 range (closer to the 500 please) personal relations would be super helpful, thanks in advance cos you guys are usually dead helpful, (i searched but couldn't find anything that was really helpful)

Sound is primary. The Ampeg SVT3-Pro is a nice head, and 450W into 4 ohms goes a long way.

I checked the Peavey site and pulled up the manual for the Firebass head (not the Firebass II). The manual says the head is 700W into 2 ohms and 475W into 4 ohms. If it's the same as the head you're talking about, 25W more isn't going to make a noticeable difference.

I have never played a Firebass head.

Alright, I have been talked into the Ampeg. For the cab I am thinking about getting an Avatar 410. Is the head under powered for this cab or should it work fine? The cab is rated at 1400 watts but each speaker is rated at 350 watts.

depends on what OHM-age you tell dave to make it... I'm not sure what the different ratings on the Ampeg are.
