Griffinator Posted June 12, 2002 Posted June 12, 2002
Originally posted by Dix: [b]No... the Republicans elected the one who more closely reflects Republican principles. The Republicans hold dear the principles of cowtowing to big business (particularly Big Oil) and the principles of war economics (specifically, that war increases consumer spending, and that ground war tends to reduce unemployment by reducing the number of live young males). GeeDubya definitely reflects those principles far better than McCain. A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.

(Hell, if I had been with her, I'd deny it too!) After spending $40+ million dollars investigating alleged wrong doings, that is all they could come up with. After less than two years in office, cold Bush/Cheney stand up to that kind of scrutiny? Just because he is in office durring a crisis, doesn't mean I support him. And, just because I don't support him, does not mean I do not stand behind my country. -David R.
popstalin Posted June 12, 2002 Posted June 12, 2002
Originally posted by Rog: OK, 21 posts and only one person thought I was talking shite, which begs the question ... Why do you put up with this? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, that's a great question. If it upsets you that all politicians are liars, do you vote, do you vote for honesty, how do you determine honesty? How do you avoid being disenfranchised?
I think the reason that there is nothing done about it is because what can we do? The only reason I ask this is that Al Gore won the popular vote - that is the citizens of the US speaking out. However, the college vote or whatever it's called, chose Bush, Jr. If our votes don't count what can we do? There have been allegations for years that Republicans work hard at keeping minorities from voting boothes. There were plenty more the last election. How are we supposed to change things if the candidates chosen aren't worthy and then they steal the election anyway? Jen H.
Dogfur Posted June 12, 2002 Posted June 12, 2002
Originally posted by wondercrush: How are we supposed to change things if the candidates chosen aren't worthy and then they steal the election anyway?[/QB]
My answer to this is not easy and requires effort - Write, fax, e-mail and call your state senators and congressional representatives ( of both parties! ) and tell them how abhored you are at their apparent inability to act on such an obvious miscarriage of "democracy". More importantly, tell them of financial contributions to their respective parties and pet organizations that are going to be eliminated and lobbied AGAINST because of their weak performance as legislators. Specifics, like $ amounts of past contributions, and names of higher-ups involved with fundraising committees get particular attention in these matters...Basically get involved at a filthier level than is comfortable, hold your public servants accountable. Educating yourself on issues and embarrasing politicians with their lack of that knowledge/and or compromised positions on past and current issues can be rewarding as well...ex: newspaper editorials, public appearances, etc... Remember that non- participation in the process actually is support for the broken system. Sorry for lifting my leg on this one.... Woof!
popstalin Posted June 12, 2002 Posted June 12, 2002 I do get involved, I vote, I volunteer for my party. I've stood in the rain and handed out leaflets. I'm involved. However, I can tell you what I am hearing and that is what my previous post was about. People have felt for the longest time that their vote didn't count for anything and after the last election, imagine how they feel? And it doesn't matter which party they voted. Left your leg as high as you'd like - I'm wearing a rainsuit. Jen H.

I was feeling a bit too preachy after writing that, and felt I should acknowledge the topic with some brevity. ( I will now not use the planned butt-sniffing joke... ) All peeing aside, I am glad you are involved - I think that a great deal of our current "democracy" based woes are created in the lack of accountability allowed to the process through complacency and inaction. Woof!
Wrave Posted June 13, 2002 Posted June 13, 2002 Let's face it, as long as "John Q. Public" gets his news from the news briefs on TV, as long as JQP is willing to let others think for him (the effect of the religious right) and as long as the situation is presented in as circuitous a manner as possible, he can be manipulated. How can a citizen know even what is pertinent in this political climate? Certainly terrorism and national security are important but is this something new? Where have the politicians been for the last 30 years or more? Surely someone capable of "critical thinking" would have seen that continuing to build up a military presence heavily invested in conventional warfare was not only a waste of money but a fool's dream if they didn't see covert attacks coming. Money folks!!! That's what it's all about. How about doing away with the estate taxes? Who's gonna benefit from that one? How about just up and moving the corporate headquarters to Jamaica? Or "unconventional" accounting practices. I get so tired of the same old shit administration after administration. "Get out and vote." What a bunch of crap! Elections have been bought and paid for for years. I say stay home on election day. You all saw what happened last presidential election. Why bother to vote? Here's another one, what about insurance? I was always taught to buy insurance to protect myself from losses. Anybody tried to collect on their insurance lately? Did you get dropped like a hot potato? Did your rates go up? Did the ins. company ever pay off? Is Uncle Sam investigating? Has the ins. company moved it's headquarters to the Bahamas yet? Ya know, we don't have anywhere else to go. We can't pull up stakes and set sail for another continent. But don't worry, there's a big match on WWF tonight and Bill got his member munched and that damned bin Laudin is still on the loose and the end is near and a million other diversions from the facts and the "real" questions. And there's tons of facts and questions... There is a finite supply of crude oil, it WILL run out someday. Then what? There is enough food produced to feed more people than are being fed now. Why do so many go to bed hungry? Do people that choose to live in the desert need swimming pools? Should pharmaceutical manufacturers charge us so much (here in the US) that many cannot afford their much needed medications? Do corporate executives really need (let's not bring "deserve" into the question) another 10 million dollar bonus? If global warming is for real, can I plant coconut palms in my yard in Indiana? If we slap an exorbitant tax on smokers, will they get help at a reduced cost when they get sick? What about drinkers? Druggies? Can we rob from the coffers of the older citizens in the name of a big old TAX BREAK so we can get elected next time, and get away with it? See, theres lot's of questions, tons of facts, and most choose to ignore the facts and will accept any seemingly authoritative answer. It's much easier to let someone else do your thinking for you. Then you don't have to share in any of the responsibility for the results and Lord are those "authoritative voices" good with the excuses. As far as Dubya is concerned, the man hasn't got brains enough to blow his nose. The only way he ever got into office was by promising a lot of little republicans who are as greedy and want to be as rich as those at the top of the republican food chain, that all the have to do is "vote republican", and you too can be a corporate executive and skim off all the cream from this great nation of ours!!! And as I watch our (my) finances worsen (I won't use the term "economy" for finances as there is nothing economic about this administration's spending), it's all I can do to refrain from saying "I told ya so." to my republican friends. And, I am picking on republicans today but the fact is that this two party system ain't working very well in the 21st century. Capitalism should be killed but I am not sure what there is to replace it with. I've said too much but I really am frustrated about this political crap. Somehow, people have got to think and feel again. Sorry to have rambled on so. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ME: "Nobody knows the troubles I've seen!" Unknown Voice: "The Shadow do!"
