used amps?

I was looking for a new amp and cab in August, and then when school started I just stuck with my Crate combo and a borrowed DI for performances.

Now, I would like to upgrade my monitor to a 2x10, such as the Goliath Jr., but like the used price more than the new price, duh.

I have never bought used musical equipment, and was wondering if anyone has any comments about getting used gear, cabinets and heads in particular.

Thanks.

p.s. I play funk, rock, r&b, and classic rock such as (T.O.P., RCHP, Pink Floyd, John Mayall).

And the tone I am looking for is what an SVT-350 with a 6x10 produces.

I've bought very little used. I own a Kustom 2x12 and 70's Carvin guitar head that I bought used in a local store. I wasn't worried because it was a store, and I figured I could deal with them if something went wrong for the first 30 days. I also got to hear it!!

There are people on our boards that I would buy from, but I'm not much of a fan of ebay and such - I like to hear/touch what I buy.

That's me...

 You know what sounds like a SVT-350 with a 6x10?

A SVT-350 with a 6x10! :D

I've purchased used, and I have found it saved me cash. I haven't had a bad experience yet. My Stewart World 2.1 is doing fine, and I got it at a nice price.

Thanks guys. I know that I should get the SVT and 6x10, but being in high school, almost 2 grand for a bass setup isn't practical now.

Also, I don't think the 6x10 fits in my car. I'd need to check.

If you guys are selling any used amps, lemme know.

I've had very good experiences with buying used gear. It's a good way to save some money on those big purchases. Just make sure you play through the amp/cab that you are buying used; at a music store or what not.

Buying an instrument without ever playing it is another thing entirely. I don't think that I'd personally ever buy a used instrument without playing it first. Even the best manufacturers can have an off day in their production department.

I remember seeing a Carvin R1000 in GC a while ago. I should've bought it when I had the chance, instead of buying a new R600 for a little more that the used was. The only thing that was wrong with the used R1000, was that I think some of the knobs were dirty. But go and check out some used stuff at a music store and buy what you can afford.

I would really consider buying an Avatar cab or 2. They are really good quality and VERY cheap. Dave is also a really nice guy to deal with. If you wanna stay with 10's He has a 4x10, but im not sure if he can make you a 6x10. You can always get a 2x10 and a 4x10

Some folks have had good success buying used instruments via eBay and such, but I'm with Bump here -- I really like to play an instrument before I put down money for it.

That said, I've been tempted by some $300ish basses on eBay like the G&L SB-1 (essentially a P bass) and the Ibanez ATK-300 and ATK-305 (essentially MM basses).

I also have two excellent and very reliable amp techs in my local area, so if something is off w/ a used amp I buy, I know good people to take it to (even if I am bummed that I bought used gear w/ problems!). Thankfully my two amps turned out very well for me.
