Petethebassman Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Hi all! This isn't really bass-related, but here goes anyway… what the &/%”## is it about Led Zeppelin's records that so many women hate so much? It's rare to meet a woman who actually likes their music. Yesterday I was at home, listening to the “Led Zeppelin II” LP (yes, vinyl LP's, remember those?); it took my wife about 30 seconds to yell at me to “take that shit off the turntable”. And this happens every damn time I listen to Zep! I recently read a review of Led Zeppelin's “Presence” LP, the review said that “listening to this album is a fool-proof way to start a domestic argument”: I know…
_Sweet Willie_ Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Hey Pete, Many dreams come true and some have silver linings. I live for my dream and a pocketful of gold. Nonetheless, I have not had a similar experience. While my wife would certainly not reach for Led Zep as her first choice for our aural enjoyment, she would not tell me to, "Pull that $#!& out of the CD player!" My wife gave me the 10-CD remastered Led Zep collection as a gift over 10 years ago when it came out. Peace. spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk.
coyote Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Zep ain't the only band to get that reaction. King Crimson, Deep Purple, ELP, Yes, Coltrane, Parker.... anything that ain't either 'dance' music or easy listening won't score high for the average woman. (Female musicians, this does not apply to you!!) I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football.
BenLoy Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I have many female friends who like Zeppelin. I think it's Robert Plant's voice that's the big problem for a lot of people who don't like Zeppelin. If they find his voice irritating they just can't get past it. Now, getting my female friends to like Mike Keneally...that's pretty much a pipe dream!
The Bear Jew Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I bought How The West Was Won when it came out... My wife watches it almost once per week. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu

The Bear Jew Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 To be perfectly frank... if she did decide to step out on me, I'd never know. I'm just not home that often. But I DO know she likes Zep. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
dcr Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I think the Wilson sisters were pretty big fans. Heck, they even covered "Achilles' Last Stand." You may have heard it...they called it "Barracuda." My wife's OK on Zep. She never listened to rock before she met me, but pretty soon I got her into Paul Simon, Pink Floyd, Yes, etc. But someone mentioned King Crimson--that's hilarious! That's the one band I like that she just absolutely doesn't get. She can't see WHAT I see in them. I've slipped the cassette in the car, at low volume, just to see if she'd notice; and yeah, within about 30 seconds she just stops whatever she's doing/saying, & goes, "What the hell are we listening to?!?" Cracks me up. We just can't seem to agree that all those shrieky, overdriven violin strains at the end of "Talking Drum" count as cool.
_Sweet Willie_ Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 It was an April morning when they told us we should go. As I turned to you, you smiled at me How could we say no? Barracuda. spreadluv Fanboy? Why, yes! Nordstrand Pickups and Guitars. Messiaen knew how to parlay the funk.
onamission Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Although my wife tolerates Zep it isn't her first choice. She likes Floyd pretty well though. I think it has to do with being able to decipher the lyrics. If she can't understand the lyrics she's not interested. I, on the other hand, pay more attention to the musicianship than I do the lyrics. - Jon ----- You have the right to remain in the groove, any solos cannot be used against you, you have the right to snap and pop, if you cannot snap and pop, two fingers can provide the funk just fine.
rockinredneck69 Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Some bands just seem to have a sound that guys tend to enjoy more, AC/DC comes to mind on that subject. Donnie Peterson

If you really want to clear a room of women, just put on "Caress of Steel" or "Signals". There are a bunch of bands that everyone I know hates, and there are even more bands that only certain types of women like, but Rush is the only band I know of that many non-musician guys really like while almost all non-musician girls HATE. "For instance" is not proof.
rockinredneck69 Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Very true, I don't think I've every played a Rush album without the wife giving me a "look". Donnie Peterson
bc_dup1 Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I'd add Hendrix to the list, at least in my house. Anyone worry that the women may be right though? This is a serious question, it occurs to me from time to time. (One reason I've never been in a rock band - playing is a social thing for me - who wants to spend their social life entertaining 150 bikers and the 3 girlfriends they've managed to muster between them)?
rockinredneck69 Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 So then my wife's opinion that my musical tastes suck is correct? No way, just differant than hers. At any rate, I give her my "look" when she would play Crystal Gayle or Air Supply...even though I do like some of those melodys. Donnie Peterson
coyote Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 The women are always right, or so they all say. It's simply a difference in tastes. I was not a Stones fan in my teens; I was listening to ELP, Yes, Mahavishnu, etc. But as I got into gigging, it did not escape my attention that the dance floors would fill with chicks as soon as we played a Stones tune... I learned to like playing them AND lots of different dance music. You can't really dance to Rush's 'Xanadu' lol.' But I will NEVER understand why people like ACDC. It might be OK were it not for the annoying shrieking they get from their singers. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football.
dcr Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Yeah, but that's a bit like saying Steely Dan would be OK if not for that cheesy Rhodes piano sound. Speaking of which, my wife really, really likes Steely Dan. Nobody say ANYTHING. Jethro Tull is another band that gets "the look." Red, you're a better man than I. Any person who played Air Supply in my presence, at any time, for any reason, under any circumstances, would get a WHOLE LOT more than just a look.
ibescotty Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 My wife hates high pitched tinny sounds in music. What can I say. She's the wife of a bass player and loves the low end of things. That means that she has a lot of disdain for 70's - 80's rock as there are a bunch of high pitched tinny voices out there. She toloerates Zep. Rush gets a sigh and a look. Journey's right out!! There's also the music style---hard riffing music always seems to appeal more to young guys & maybe it's just a matter of percentages, i.e., Zep just has/had more male fans.
SteveC Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Someone beat me to adding RUSH to this. My g/f hates Geddy's voice. She likes the music , but can't get past his voice. That goes for some of my male friends, too. My sisters on the other hand, love RUSH. Go figure?
Joel Wilson Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 Just goes to show there's no accounting for one's personal taste in music. My wife picked out several concerts that we'll be seeing (seen) this year, included Steely Dan, Oscar Peterson, Ringo's All-Star's, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsallis, and if anywhere within 500 miles, Bela &/or Victor. I, of course, keep my dial tuned firmly on the AM bandwidth awaiting Bobby Shermans' "Julie do you love me" and crank up the db's when the trumpets hit the double high G's! Go figure. "Arf", she said.
jeremy c Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 I go to fusion concerts all the time....not a lot of women there. I don't remember seeing any women in the audience at a recent John Scofield show. I also don't remember seeing any women in the audience when I went to see Jaco with his Word of Mouth band many years ago. A comedian opened for Jaco...and it was painful to watch...the fuzoids in the crowd (everyone)were a bunch of humorless stick-in-the-muds and basically drove the poor schnook off the stage. On the other hand, I was surprised to see lots of women in the audience last year at a Victor Wooten show....although most of them seemed to be screaming for J.T. Blair. Go figure. Put on Table Beat Science live in S.F. if you want to send your loved ones screaming from the room. Or even worse, buy a copy of The World\'s Most Unwanted Song Free download of my cd!.

Basshappi Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 WOW! I guess I'll just keep the wife I have then! She likes everything that's been mentioned so for(with the exception of some that Jeremy mentioned, but only because we haven't listened to them before.)Actually I'm less tolerent than she is because I don't like very much (recent) dance music. We were watching "Shadows and Light" the other night( )and she said,"I absolutely love the sound of his bass." and she enjoys it when I throw on a Bela Fleck CD. About the only CD that gets 'the look' is when I put in something by The Bobs, but hey you can't have everything! So eat your hearts out you poor, poor men! Nothing is as it seems but everything is exactly what it is - B. Banzai Life is what happens while you are busy playing in bands.
Tedly Nightshade Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 "what the &/%## is it about Led Zeppelins records that so many women hate so much? Its rare to meet a woman who actually likes their music." I've known a number of women who have enjoyed cracking open a bottle and dancing naked to Led Zep for their own private gratification. A lot of them are musicians and dancers. I worked with a woman who calls herself the Led Zeppelin Bellydancer. And a number of the female songwriters I know have Led Zeppelin as their primary influence. I always wondered, what is it about Led Zeppelin that women like so much? I could ask the same question about Jethro Tull, to a lesser extent. A WOP BOP A LU BOP, A LOP BAM BOOM! "There is nothing I regret so much as my good behavior. groucho Posted September 26, 2003 Posted September 26, 2003 My wife is OK with Zep but she loves Def Leppard Scorpions,Alice Cooper and other "guitar bands" But then... she also loves Duran Duran My highschool girlfriend used to cream over Ledzep and would have been a groupie for them if she had gotten half a chance My brother in his youth, had a cadre of pals that lived ate and breathed Ledzep... This culminated in my playing a NY'rs Eve party with them doing all Zep all night, complete with Zep vinyl being spun between our sets! if it ain't broke don't fix it... unless you need the overtime.

By the way, all women really like Steely Dan, I think they lie if they deny it. Donnie Peterson
