My advice... If you can get 'em for a good price... GRAB 'EM!!! They make great acoustic guitar mics. They are my first choice for drum overheads as well. :D When used on a snare it will yield a brighter more cutting snare than the standard SM-57 does.

Thanks Dix! I think I can grab the pair for just over $400. They're used but definitely not abused. 4 sure, I'll use 'em on acoustic. Unfortunately, real drums are a thing of the future for me. I just don't have the room (or the neighbors) for a drum set presently. But, for this mic purchase, I AM thinking ahead to a time when I will be mic'ing up my nice new kit. It's a few years out but it's GONNA HAPPEN! I hope Lee won't pity me too much! Anyways, thanks again for the info!!!

I didn't realize they were so small until I held them in my hand. They're so CUTE!!! I don't think I even care how they sound... :) Rif, we'll discuss rental rates later ;)

ATOMIC! Damn, I love those boys sometimes... Do they have a lot at that price? (I know that ain't likely, but it's worth a shot...) I know Veneman's is gone. Too bad, too. They had gone downhill in recent years, but Mr. Veneman was always a cool guy to me. When my band back in '89 didn't have enough money for the mixer we wanted/needed, he recognized me from being in there so much and asked if I was honest. I said yes, and he let me pay off an additional $150 over the next month. Years later, the girl singer in my band bought an acoustic guitar 'as is' at their May sale. Less than a month later, the bridge started pulling up off the body, ruining the guitar. No salesman would give us the time o' day, but I spied Mr. Veneman and asked him if he could do me a favor and take a look at what was happening to her guitar. He looked, asked me "Do I owe you any favors?" I panicked for a minute that this couldn't be the same nice guy that helped me out the years before. I told him that he didn't owe me any favors and related the previous story. Rachel (the girl) said, smiling, "but you've never done anything like that for me." He laughed and said he'd gladly take it back as a trade-in or trade-up, and he was sorry for it having cracked and split like that. The original acoustic was only about $250. I loaned Rachel money to trade-up a Joe Pass Emperor. I'm sorry that Guitar Center took them over. Drew

DING! You win! :D Yeah, that place is awesome just because you never really know what you'll find in there. It's like a musical flea market and is the antithesis of places like Mars and G.C. Sorry, but they only had the pair of 451s. Also, I should mention that it's not a matched pair but, I don't think I care too much about that. Cool Veneman stories, man. I guess it's true that they had gone downhill in the years before their aquisition but it's kinda cool to reminisce about the old days anyway. It used to be cooler then :)
Originally posted by riffing: Congrats rog! Of course, now that I know how much you paid for them, you'll need to rent them to me real cheap. ;) Dang you Murrlanders! Does Atomic have a web site? Care to enlighten me? I didn't even know they existed - shows you how "in" I am! :p
Actually, I only found out about Atomic a year or so ago. It's just inside the beltway on Rte 1. I don't think they have a website; hell, they barely have a store! :) It's like they get all this used stuff and they just throw it in a big pile and you hafta go rummaging through it all. It's the kind of store that would appeal more to the flea market crowd than the Bloomingdale's crowd I think. They have a little of everything but they usually tend to be heavy on guitar stuff. I try to go once a month or so and they seem to have completely different stuff every time I go in. To me, it's a fun place to go but some of my friends don't like it too much....they prefer G.C. so what do they know anyway?

I prefer Chuck Levin's, but Atomic runs a close second. Definitely a flea market atmosphere, but there are occaisionally some real gems there. (As Rog found out.) And right next door is CDepot, which has some of the best prices on CDs and DVDs around. Gotta love college towns...
Originally posted by MIKEHARRIS: Was that the new C451 B reissue????have you compared them to the original???
Yeah, it's the reissue. I've never messed with one of the originals so I can't say how they compare. I plugged 'em up last night just to make sure they worked ok (they were used) and I like 'em already. I didn't have much time to spend, though, so I wasn't too thorough in my evaluation. One huge difference between the reissue and the originals is that the new ones aren't modular. Tell you the truth, I didn't even think about that until after I'd made the purchase. So, you're stuck with cardoid if you go with the reissue. It's supposed to match the old CK-1 capsule pretty much exactly from a sonic standpoint. I must admit, the thing that originally got me thinking about the 451s was the ability to swap out capsules, etc (I think it's my "collector instinct" maybe) but what the hell...I feel like I got a good deal. My current room isn't the best so, in reality, I'd probably have ended up using cardoid most of the time anyway.
Originally posted by MIKEHARRIS: cool...you're lucky to have found those used..as they only began shipping recently..and the non-modular construction should keep contacts down 7 the mic quiet
Yeah, I'm not usually this lucky so I'm waiting for something to happen (like, for the paint to start chipping off, revealing the "Behringer" logo underneath :D ). I don't have any idea why these were there...they LOOK new, still in the cool little wooden boxes and everything. Maybe somebody bought 'em, didn't like 'em and just traded 'em in? I'm sure not gonna complain!!!

Do you have Atomic's address? I'm semi-familiar with College Park since I lived in Lanham for a year but an address would help me find it quicker!

Hey riff, I was wrong about them not having a website. It kinda looks like it hasn't been updated in a few years but at least the address/phone numbers are on there: http://www.atomic-music.com/ Good luck and don't buy anything out from under me!!! ;)
