What the hell is this about Spector

Spector has a pretty well-known rep for being a kook -- paranoid, controlling and a gun nut. He apparently never let his ex-wife (Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes) out of the house. He made her get her massages at home from a female masseuse and Ronnie always had to wear a one-piece bathing suit during massage sessions. He apparently would do weird shit like put a mannequin of himself in a chair near the window when he wasn't home so that others wouldn't know if he was really home or not. And even though she wasn't allowed to leave the house, he would regularly accuse her of cheating on him and having men there...

And then there are the stories The Ramones told about Spector keeping a gun on the mixing board during sessions and threatening people with it if they tried to leave....

Serious loon. But damn... he DID make some great sounding records.

REad the news. Phil Spector is out on $1,000,000 bail for murder. He allegedly shot and killed a woman who was visiting him.

He apparently picked her up in a club earlier that evening.

Spector reportedly fired a shot at John Lennon in the studio during the Let It Be sessions. The very thought of it makes me cringe when I think of what happened ten years later.

I had heard that Spector once agree to produce an album for Charles Manson. Spector reneged. The Manson murders (including Sharon Tate, wife of Roman Polanski) were committed in a house that Spector had once owned. Spector had moved out. Some unfortunate people moved in.

Everything about this guy's life is like a freaking nightmare.

No, that's Stuart Spector. He makes basses instead of albums, and he hasn't shot anyone AFAIK. :D

Yeah, Phil Spector is/was a loon, but he is still responsible for one of the best quotes I've ever read. Asked his opinion of the Spice Girls, he said (and I'm paraphrasing here), "Some people compare their stage show to a porn movie, but there's one big difference. A porn movie has better music."

Mr. Spector, as you should be calling him, is the finest producer of our time. He gave, to every song that he beleived in, the perfect arrangement, never bettered.

Of course he has his demons, but he could have been a mass murderer and he would still have caused more good than evil in my eyes.
