Wally Malone
I've already mentioned in some other threads that I spent Saturday evening and Sunday at the Monterey Jazz Festival. My role there was to get those playing on the main stage to sign the release forms and get their payment for a local FM-Public Radio broadcast. I met John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Jon Hendricks (Tom's dad and I share a birthday with Jon), Kurt Elling, Mark Murphy, Kevin Mahogany, Joe Sample, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Terri Lyne Carrington and others. The problem with the job I do there is that I don't catch as much music as I would like to but I did get to catch the whole show of the Crusaders. They had Ray Parker Jr. playing guitar with them. I had met Ray working on legislative issues with the Recording Artist Coalition in Sacramento over a year ago. Ray introduced me to Joe Sample and after the show I met their bassplayer Freddie Washington who is from the SF Bay Area, I believe the East Bay. He was one of the few electric bassist I saw on the main stage. Most everyone else played URB's. Freddie is a great pocket player, which he should be playing with the Crusaders. We had thread here a little while back regarding gigs we would like to do. I would definitely enjoy playing with the Crusaders. It would be one of those gigs that I would fit into without a stretch. Hearing some of the older Crusader material makes me think about pulling out some of my 70's vinyl. Monterey Jazz Festival is a mid-September thing each year, if you have the opportunity you should check it out. Wally I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make! Dolomite
That is very cool. I did a project in art school years ago where we had to pick an event an do a logo and ad for it. I did Monterey Jazz Festival. It sounds like an awesome gig you got there. I would love to spend a little time with that stable of musicians. jeremy c
Ready Freddie Washington is from Oakland. I remember when he was starting out. He's in the Standing in the Shadows book, he played on "Forget Me Nots", he played on Anita Baker's first album, he wrote a tune that was on Whitney Houston's first album, he played on the Motown 25th anniversary show. Talented cat. How did the sub for Kenny G work out? Sorry I couldn't do it, I had to play a Bar Mitzvah gig with the Joel Nelson Orchestra. Free download of my cd!. Wally Malone
Larry (not sure how to spell his last name) from Frankie Beverly & Maze did the Kenny G show. I haven't talked to him since the show but did talk to Mark Wright (Whappo) who referred Larry and my understanding was that it all worked out fine. I was quite surprised when I found out they had no music, especially since the calls I made were looking for good readers. They lucked out that Larry was in SF up from LA and had Saturday night off. I did find out from Whappo that Kenny's bass player Val had an appendectomy and my understanding was that he was going to play the next night. I think it would be difficult playing after any surgery. Wally I have basses to play, places to be and good music to make!
