There's nothing like a "new" bass to brighten up a gig:

Luthier Karl Hoyt built me this five string bass a couple years ago; the original neck had some quirks, so he kindly replaced it. It originally had a Madagascar rosewood fingerboard, and I asked that he go with maple this time around. Boy, did he treat me right, the maple is about as flamey as it gets, just gorgeous.

This is the original photo (pre-neck replacement), alongside is a close-up of the mango wood cap, which in addition to its tight and gorgeous grain, is flamed as well. The body wood is mahogany.

But I digress. This bass kicks ass!

It always did do a nice job with the Lane Poor pickups and three band Bartolini preamp, but the new neck is absolutely perfect in feel and performance. The bass just fits me perfectly, ergonomically it is in place and plays like a dream. It gave me four sets of dream bass last night. He made me a five string fretless first, that this bass echos, and I had wanted a fretted equivalent-- this instrument now really hits the mark.

Bottom Line: if it were ugly as hell I'd still be playing it. One thing about Karl's basses, you can tell that a fellow bass player is behind it. But I can't help but show the photos of how classy it is. Thanks, Karl!!

If it sounds half at good as at looks, then it looks twice as good as it sounds! :freak:

Seriously, that's one gorgeous bass. I caught myself daydreaming about mangowood earlier today! So when do we get to hear it?

Karl out did himself, I've never seen Mango used before. That's one of the most beautiful basses I've ever seen Bob! If it plays half as good as it looks, you have one fine bass. :thu:

You have the right to remain in the groove, any solos cannot be used against you, you have the right to snap and pop, if you cannot snap and pop, two fingers can provide the funk just fine.

And that is, indeed, the beauty of it-- it's perfect.
